I thought that this was a stand alone tool as the image on that link doesn't look like it is going through a browser.

Also the link to download it, seems to indicate stand alone, see below

hXXp://download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe.

So is there not a means of launching this tool in the Startup Folder, desktop, etc.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.4.6112 (build 24.4.9067.762) UI 1.0.803/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

guys this is not an MS link at all, I wouldn't advise to install that. Just the download link is very misleading, just don"t trust that.

edit: forget my post, that's MS  ;D

it's just the update agent, that won't bring the Vista/Seven GUI to XP  ;)

...and as said, you should have it already installed  ;D the website (askvg.com) is completely misleading  :D

and now from Microsoft:

If you use the Microsoft Update Web site to install the latest updates, or you have automatic updates turned on in Windows, the latest version of the Update Agent will automatically be installed on your computer.

what's there to laugh about ? that you've been trying to install something that's already installed on all Windows computers through WinUpdate itself.

Strangely enough, I don't have it installed, it wasn't offered in the August or September Patch Tuesday assault.

So visiting hXXp://wXw.update.microsoft.com/ after this batch of posts, when checking for updates if offered to install the latest windows update version which I accepted. Once installed, it completed the check and I have no updates pending, as expected.

anyway and then I'm done with that, the website was showing a screenshot of Windows Update interface clearly showing that it was taken on Vista (not even Seven as advertised  :D ), with a reference to the Control Panel in the address bar that can't be implemented in XP obviously  ;D

edit: I'm just wrong on one point, the screenshot is from Seven, not Vista.

<snip>

Generally I have XP SP3 windows automatic updates set to 'Notify of updates but not install.' So I check what is offered and uncheck things like the Malicious software one, etc. On dial-up I have to be selective or it could tie my system up for long periods (it has taken days in the past to get updates).

If I actually go to windows update, I always use Custom for the same reasons and have never seen this update to the update process until today.
