Microsoft will start offering some European Windows users a choice of a web browser next week, the company announced on Friday, as it starts it publically test its legally mandated browser ballot process.

Wow, didn't know they (Microsoft) had a Browser Monopoly ???  I've been using Google Chrome for the last 6 month and before that I was using Firefox
as my default browser.
The last time I checked the definition of a monopoly, it referred to exclusive rights to the extent of excluding all others.  ??? ??? ???

How about an OS ballot screen instead?

It will tell you to choose an OS as your default and it will install itself over Windows. But you will have to back up all your personal files.

I would probably like the idea.

http://www.customizegoogle.com/ also does it.
Unfortunatelly, you need to force the installation on new versions of Firefox.

CustomizeGoogle seems to have been abandoned.  Use OptimizeGoogle :: Add-ons for Firefox instead.

This extension was created to maintain and improve the CustomizeGoogle extension developed by Daniel, which seems to have been abandoned, falling behind the changes which Google has been making to their pages.

Microsoft has not had a monopoly in the browser market for quit some time, Firefox has been a viable alternative for a while now

I go one problem though with that guy on Malekal: he doesn't know the difference between the network shield and the web shield  ;D ie he describes the web shield as if it was the network shield, referring to white and black lists of web sites, and tells his users that's how the web shield works  ::) ... also comparing it to Trend Micro web reputation tool...or like quoted, as if V5 included a "web guard" being an enhanced version of the web shield, and may be replacing it...

Quote

In version 5, Avast! includes a Web Guard (as the web shield but improved), it breaks the connection to the website where a malicious javascript / Exploit is detected and it is enough to pay final.
Web Guard operates through a database of malicious sites, if they are accepted, access is blocked. This database is little used for exploits but a little more for some families of Fake Codecs.
Avast! therefore offers the best protection WEB present in this test of free antivirus

a web guard hey  ::)

NIce... Cograts to the AVAST team. Can't wait to read the full review.

One thing I have to ask though. Based on Logos post, did the modus operandi of the web shield and network shield changed from version 4.8 to version 5.

Quote
Starting from the version 4.6. avast! comes with a new on-access scanning provider - Web Shield.
It is able to monitor and filter all HTTP traffic coming from the Web sites on the Internet. It’s implemented as a HTTP proxy running on your PC.
Connections from your Web browser are redirected to the Web Shield module. Web Shield in turn connects to the requested web server and while downloading the content it scans it for viruses and Trojans. Only the clean data is delivered to the browser, every malware is stopped before it gets saved on your PC.

Network Shield is a protection against known Internet worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious contents. It can be also taken as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an IDS (Intrusion Detection System).

Network Shield protects you from internet worms that spread themselves via various security holes in your system. Typicaly these kind of viruses don't infect files but instead  they attack running processes on your PC (either Windows components or some server programs like SQL Server, IIS etc.). These kind of attacks are not easily catched by ordinary antivirus during file or mail scanning. It is not a duplicate work with Standard Shield.

Basically, it covers all Internet worms. Such as Win32.CodeRed, Win32.SQLSlammer, Win32.Blaster, in32.Welchia (Nachi) and Win32.Sasser.

If you have Windows updated and a firewall, you won't see Network Shield scanning (most probably).
