I think the Genie Timeline is a bit different in that it is to work in with Windows and provide bottom-line backup suitable for all users.

It should be more lightweight (tho, it is 146mb) than is Commodo range, and less sticky, more like backup services already offered by Microsoft like the ones in Bob's post (above). But I cannot say for sure because I let the opportunity pass this time round.

I use the built in windows backup in Windows 7 to back up all 3 systems to a 2tb external HD.
It does an excellent job. Totally hassle free and the created Image has gotten me out of more than 1 jam.
Since it works in the background, alerts me if there is a problem and has always been reliable, I see no reason
to add something else to an already bulging system.  ;D

Bob, the features aren't the same. We're talking about individual files backup, about a timeline of changed files, not image backups. Your backup strategy is ok, just that the programs aren't the same.

I have mozy too but hardly ever use it. Adrive gives you 50gb of free storage space, the only drawback is that uploading and downloading is rather slow.

It's not always about the amount of space3 but the features that are offered. Mozy allows scheduling of you backups so that it's done
at a time convenient for you. I have Mozy scheduled to do my backups while I'm sound asleep.
After the initial backup, you're actually only backing up any changed files. :)

The only thing I back up is the My Documents folder and I do that every so often on a DVD R/W with my regular burning program that came with the machine. Everything else I can get back easily. I really don't even use Adrive much. The only things stored there are the driver files for this machine which I could also get from HP's site and are also stored on a DVD.  I don't have any backup software other than system restore and I've never even used that.

Dch,
When, not if, it happens, you'll look back at this little post and say well, maybe I should have
been doing regular backups.  :)

I doubt it will happen but even if it does, I'd be back up and running in the same state as now within a few hours with nothing lost. The only two times in 11 years that I have had to reformat were caused by me following "expert" advice about how I should tweak my system. Advice that resulted in disaster. I see no reason to backup anything but the My Documents folder.

Hi Dch48,

Maybe you have not thought about this, but technology has overtaken us now. Say that you work on a machine, that machine has leaking condensators and this has ruined the old Mobo beyond repair, wouldn't you need your back-ups then?

Answer no, because you can have the hard-disk restored as a peripheral for a few bucks encased with its own USB plug and feed and hang it undo a new computer (have to re-own the data again with Vista or W7 but still have all your data), in the case of SafeHex and without a destructive virus infection then maybe you should not need back-ups, but I still have a back-up on a usb stick (8 GB is enough for incrementals),
