Is the era of not-free antivirus software drawing to a close?

http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/antivirus/231000191

He has at least one fact wrong: MSE does not auto install if no A/V is detected, It's offered as an optional install.

According to data collected by software management vendor OPSWAT, from March to May 2011, the top five most-used antivirus products in use in North America were Microsoft Security Essentials (16%), AVG Anti-Virus Free (11%), Avast Free Antivirus (7%), Norton AntiVirus (6%), and Mcafee VirusScan (4%). Interestingly, three of those are free.

The only reason that only three of those are free is because people don't know any better and just pay for whatever came on their computer in the first place (or their ISP).
Saying that it's the only reason people use Norton or McAfee is a stretch. While it's true that many do because it's what they were given, many others choose to use those products because they trust them and have a history of trouble free protection. From my experiences, I would say that the only reason I use Avast over Norton is that I can get it free. I haven't  noticed it being any better or worse in the security it provides or the impact it has on my system.

WiFi 'napping' doubles phone battery life
A Duke University graduate student has found a way to double the battery life of mobile devices – such as smartphones or laptop computers – by making changes to WiFi technology.

If that actually works he better get it patented fast. It could be a gold mine.

It wouldn't help me right now though since I have no mobile devices and the WiFi in this laptop is disabled. I use it as a desktop, connected to a wired router. I don't even own a wireless router, they aren't very good for gaming.

that's because wifi was crap on XP (until SP2 at least)... The stability of wifi has been dramatically improved with Vista and Seven... but that's old news already.

No---it doesn't matter what OS you're using, a wired connection is always more reliable than WiFi.

how?

1 connection interruptions on wifi? that was on XP, never happens with Vista/Seven.
2 speed? I get up to 40 Mb/s here on wifi/801"G"... (if my router accepted "N" connections, it would be more)
3 security? keyword is WPA/WPA2

what's left in terms of reliability now?

IMO, Wireless should only be used when necessary.  If you're close enough to use a CAT5, do it.  Hardwired will always be better than WiFi except for the convenience.

PCM is not new.
I'm wondering why only now they are doing something with that technology.
