Internet Explorer 9 is Safest Web Browser, NSI Says

"Microsoft this week is touting the results of two recent studies from NSI showing that its Internet Explorer 9 web browser does a better job of protecting users from malware than the competition. In fact it's not even close."

I always liked IE9 especially IE 9's Application Reputation technologies.
But then you have to be running Windows 7.

Mozilla plans to hide Firefox version numbers:
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Mozilla-plans-to-hide-Firefox-version-numbers-1323830.html
It's one way to stop all the complaints about the many updates.
Certainly doesn't change anything except cause other complaints.
IMHO, it's a dumb move.

It also isn't a smart move, how the h*ll are people to know when there are compatibility issues with add-ons, etc. with certain versions of firefox.

This guy catches my mood/feeling about this:
Quote
Participants in the Bugzilla discussion had little enthusiasm for the proposal. One critic said "This is a REALLY dumb, stupid, idiotic idea!", a comment to which Do****er responded by threatening to remove the participant's Bugzilla posting privileges.

Great, shoot the messenger (really intelligent NOT, pathetic), when that would be the same feelings of may firefox users and one that really is common sense. People need to know the version of the software that they are using and not just firefox.

Hi DavidR,

The analogy here is like that with server software. You preferably for security reasons do not give away the version number to give not too much away for a hacker to be exploited, well seen as with browsers users could know for instance that IE5 is less secure than IE9. Best policy is like Chrome has it update automatically to the latest most secure version and do not let the user interfere or the browser developer. Do not know where Mozilla got this plans from?

+1 to this being backwards and dumb

The only people happy about Fx rapid release are the writers of Add-on Compatibility Manager.....this is like a boon for them, I see people with add-on complaints getting pointed to that all over the web.

I have to face this devil sooner or later, I can only sit on OldFox 3.6.18 for so much longer, no matter my security add-ons. ;D

I agree. Now that I have W7, IE is back to being my default browser. I only use Chrome if I want to download a YouTube video.

If they keep irking their users and then censoring the backlash, I can think of somewhere they are going on many PCs....

I'm sure glad I don't use Firefox.

Sorry but that analogy just doesn't hold water as the user isn't trying to hack their own system and if you think that by not displaying the version number would somehow prevent/deter hackers than you are sadly mistaken.

Since for the most part they don't really give a stuff what version you have, it doesn't stop the speculative attempts infect systems. So they just hope that a system happens to be vulnerable to what they are trying to serve up and to hell with what version you have.

They went there a long time back on my machines. Firefox when it started was a breath of fresh air, for me it now stinks so bad I won't use it. Opera and IE9 are far and away better.

The success seems to be at the cost of what would for a third party malware blocker like avast! be an unacceptable number of false positives- Sophos says 30-75% of warnings on downloads may be false positives.

Web sites with legitimate files for download are being affected by SmartScreen warnings and complaining.

Bear this in mind if you use it.
