IS AVAST INSTALLED PROPERLY???
« on: May 13, 2006, 11:50:00 AM »
HELP PLEASE?
I am helping a friend who has installed Avast.
She has a FAMILY PC WITH MULTIPLE USERS.

OS: Windows:  XP
Avast Version: 4.7 Home
Connection:     DSL with ZoneAlarm
E-mail client:    BT Yahoo
NO OTHER AV software installed

Error messages:  "Licence key not entered" (When non-admin users log-on)
"Invalid Licence Key" (When the user enters the key)

The blue-ball icons only appear when the administrator is on line!

When other users go on line an Avast warning appears that "The licence key has not been entered" (And no blue-ball-icons appear)
When we enter the key "Invalid licence key" comes up.

We have searched and searched the Avast 4.0 FAQs but can find nothing on this!

How do we enter the licence key successfully, and protect ALL users please?

Many Thanks

Eljay

I believe avast needs to be installed and registered in the admin account with the option for all users

Just login into the account with Administrator rights and install avast.
It will be available for 'all users'.

The common users can't insert the key. Is there more than one account with Administrator rights in your computer?

Thanks Tech.

Avast was installed whilst logged-in to the admin account.

(1)How do I install the registration key whilst in this account?
(The option/request for the key does not come up in the admin. account).

Is this the problem?
But Avast still works in this account.

(2)In other users, I get the request for the key but of course it is not accepted (This seems perverse?).
There are no blue-ball-icons in these accounts (Nor hidden icons)
Is it running anyway?

thanks

eljay

In the admin account right click the A then select about Avast then select licence key (best to cut and paste from the e-mail) Unfortunately I have never had sub-accounts so I am not sure from here

See the tutorial:  http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm
Please take a look here: http://www.avast.com/eng/i_was_successfully_r.html

No. It's ok. Other users can't install the key. Only the admin account.

Is there a process called ashserve.exe running? (use Ctrl+alt+del to see).

Many thanks. The key is now installed in the admin. account.

Yes.
But still no blue-icon-balls show (in non-admin. accounts).
Is this OK?

Thanks again

You should have an startup entry for ashdisp.exe.
Just add the path to ashDisp.exe into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
(as the value named avast!).

Are you by any chance using spysweeper or any other startup monitor (prevx, winpatrol, ad-watch, tea timer, etc.)?

Thanks Tech...but could you tell me how to do this (I am not an expert..phrases like "add the path"  & "as the value named Avast" mean nothing to me)

Thanks again Tech.

Will have to check out the startup monitors

Solution 1 (easier):
1. Right click the file ashdisp.exe into the avast folder and create a link for it.
2. Move the link to C:\Documents and Settings\<your user>\Start menu\Startup folder

Solution 2 (more technical):
1. Start menu > Run
    type regedit and click Enter.
2. Browse to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run at left side.
3. At right side, right click an empty space and the word 'new' will apear.
4. Create a 'vallue' (not a 'key') called avast (REG_SZ or 'sequence'). Sorry I don't know how to say this in English.
Rename it to avast as I've said before. Right click this value and choose 'Modify'.
5. In the value data space write the full path of ashdisp.exe (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashdisp.exe)
6. Close regedit.

(1)Thanks Tech. When you say "create a link" for ashdisp.exe. Do you mean a "Shortcut"?
(2)I am not with the XP problem PC at the moment. But I cannot find "Documents and Settings" on my Win98 PC. Where is this please?

Thanks Again (Your English is great by the way)

C:\Windows\Profiles\<your name>\Start menu if I remember correctly...

.

I have done both these solutions now Tech.
NO difference I'm afraid!
The situation is still the same.
(1)When any (non-admin) user logs-on to windows the licence-key request comes up.
(2)No blue-icon-balls for (non-admin)users.

What now please?

Thanks
