Help!!!
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:21:50 PM »
I've been having trouble with my DSL operating slower than dial-up.  While I was trying to get the problem solved with  AT&T's DSL Dept, they asked me to turn off my avast.  We never solved the problem with my speed, but after it was all over, I can't seem to figure out how to turn avast back on. :-[  The link to "start provider" is grayed out and I can't click on it.

How did you stop avast, did you use the right click the avast icon and select Stop On-Access Protection ?
If so there should now be a Stop On-Access Protection option, that should restart them all if not, a reboot should restart avast.

I tried that and it didn't work.  My next idea is to uninstall avast and re-install.  I'll post on how that worked.

The question still stands, how did you disable/stop avast in the first place to cause this ?

Sorry, David...................I clicked on Stop Provider like the technician instructed me.  Just an update, though..........I uninstalled avast and downloaded it again.  This time it seems to be running.  At least the globe with the "a" in it turns when it's supposed to.  However, the Windows security warning red shield with the X in it is still on my tool bar and says my avast is turned off.  Obviously I'm not too computer savy, but I can't figure that one out.

 :)  Hi Chris :

Concerning the unreliable "Windows Security Center" :
would be best to read my posts and those of others
     at :

Okay, Spiritsongs, I've read all the posts in that link.  So you are suggesting I go into Windows Virus Alert and click on "I'll monitor the anti-virus myself", correct?  Okay, I've done that and the shield is no longer present.  Thank you.

But does that solve the problem between Microsoft and my computer or does it just fix the symptom? ???

 :)  Hi Chris :

The last thing I said in that thread was :

"Since this now appears to be an Operating System
"problem" ( not that is was NOT to begin with ), I
recommend you ask the volunteer Microsoft Most
Valuable Professional(s) on the forums at :
      www.aumha.net ; there is even  "SP2 Forum(s)", though
they appear not to have been used in quite some time. "

Why not simple do a complete un-install of avast using add/remove,
Reboot.
Then use the avast! uninstall utility to remove all registy traces.
Reboot
Re-install avast! and register it using your original key.
Reboot one more time. :)

This should restore everything and should again register avast! in the Security Center.
Let us know if that solves your problem.

Bob, I think, as mentioned here, I've already done that with no positive results.  However, I've just received some instructions from avast I have yet to follow.  I'll let everyone know what transpires.

You've only done a partial removal unless you've also cleard out the registry keys which is why I posted the link to the
uninstall utility.
Remember, you're having the problem, we are only trying to help.  :)

Bob,

When I accessed the link you gave, I realized it was the one I'd already used for my removal.  But, just to make sure, I ran through the entire process again.  No change.  But thanks for your help.

Chris,
When you hover over the a in the system tray, how many providers are active?

EDIT:
Do you remember the exact message From the Securiity Center?
