NEW Avast Version 20.9 (November 2020)
« on: November 10, 2020, 12:42:35 PM »
Hi all, please welcome the newest version of Avast AV: 20.9 (20.9.2437)

Here’s what’s officially new:
  • CyberCapture results - Miss a notification? Now in your notification center, you can see all results for suspicious files you’ve sent to our Threat Labs
  • More versatile Password Protection - Along with Chrome and Opera, we now support Microsoft Edge and, our personal favorite, Avast Secure Browser (Premium Security only)
  • Vote for features -  Vote for your favorite premium features, or submit your ideas for new ones. Simply go to Menu > About and let us know your preference (Premium Security only)
  • Performance improvements - Your antivirus components should now load even faster thanks to simultaneous loading of our main service and VPS

And some other under-the-hood improvements:
  • Moved Do Not Disturb module to separate “tools” service for better performance
  • Minor accessibility adjustments (e.g., added tray shortcuts, improved confirmation dialogs when disabling shields, etc.)
  • Corrected some issues with Sensitive Data Shield on x86 systems
  • Sensitive Data Shield also now protects manually added files without having to restart your PC
  • Fixed minor bug so Behavior Shield doesn’t duplicate detections already covered by File Shield
  • Fixed a rare case where Firewall would trigger an ask dialog for already stopped processes
  • Fixed a rare case where switching languages could fail
  • Fixed some licensing hiccups with Cleanup and VPN wallet keys when being activated by AV
  • Optimized scanning of QUIC connections
  • ...and about 100 others

How to install:

1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
2. Or you can download and install files:
Online installers (recommended):
Offline installers:

A big thanks goes to the team for yet another successful release.

How about making the undocumented/hidden geek:area function more visible ?

We are constantly having to tell users with related issues in the forums how to find and enter the 'secret handshake' geek:area of Avast.

By all means have a warning that changing these settings can effect your protection, etc. etc.
A bit like the warning in Firefox about:config area.
EDIT attached image.

Thanks for the consideration, I too feel it is just too hidden.
Given it isn't documented anywhere in the application and there are several functions in there that shouldn't be hidden in this way

Hello,
Where is Avast Leak Alerts in free version ?...

We need to keep it in Beta a little longer but should make it to the upcoming release 20.10 by the end of the year.

FWIW  I also would like to see our 'geek:area' more easily accessible.
I realize there are advanced settings in this area however I agree as mentioned, there are several functions that need to be accessible.

Why ?
What errors are you getting ?

No problem here, just downloaded the avast free off-line installer.

See attached images, I changed the file name to avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline-20-9.exe for clarity.

See attached images, I changed the file name to avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline-20-9.exe for clarity.

When I click on either online installers, a  new tab in Chrome opens and a dialog appears asking where to save and allows me to change file name.
When I click on either offline installers, a new tab opens for a second then closes itself with no dialog appearing.
I  have successfully been downloading offline installer for years just not working today.

Update: if I copy the offline installer address, then paste in address bar for new tab in Chrome then it downloads, so only problem is clicking on original link doesn't work
