Avast on Vista Home Premium [SOLVED]
« on: February 07, 2007, 04:00:38 PM »
Hi!

I have been using avast a very long time now. And I have never had any issues with it. Well this was correct until I ordered and installed my new OS Vista Home Premium (Norwegian).

The installation goes alright but when I restart the pc the blue ball never pops up. It looks like it is there but its not visible. Also when i click on avast icon it gives me this error msg. I do not get any errors on loadup either. Its just the ball not showing and the error when i try to start avast by icon.

Anyone got any idea how to fix this?

Thanks

Marius,

If you check avast! logs (either by starting avast! Log Viewer, or you can use Windows Event Viewer, section Antivirus, I guess) - are there any errors logged?

OK. Avast Log Viewer gave me the same error msg.

But in Windows Event viewer (antivirus) it told me this:

Program path "C:\Programfiler\Avast" is invalid. Correct it or reinstall the program.

Cant I use whatever path I like? I never had problem putting avast wherever i liked.

BTW: Programfiler is Program Files in english.

Please run "dir c:\ > file.txt" from command-line and post the result (file.txt) here...
Thanks.

You mean like this?

C:\>dir c:\
Volumet i stasjon C er uten navn.
 Volumserienummeret er 34A7-7223

 Innhold i c:\

18.09.2006  22:43                24 autoexec.bat
18.09.2006  22:43                10 config.sys
07.02.2007  16:57    <DIR>          Program Files
06.02.2007  16:45    <DIR>          Spill
06.02.2007  13:54    <DIR>          Users
07.02.2007  16:10    <DIR>          Windows
               2 fil(er)               34 byte
               4 mappe(r)  110 491 959 296 byte ledig

For some reason my Windows Explorer show the name Programfiler (norwegian) and not Program Files like command line does?

Also I was able to start avast now after reinstalling and putting in it path C:\Programfiler\Alwil Software\Avast4 but the blue circle is not there even if it says it should be there in msconfig.

If I manually start ashdisp.exe it starts.

Please try doing

dir /ad

and post the output. It seems that Programfiler is probably a symbolic link and that's the root cause of the problem.

Thanks

KNUTEPUNKT could be translated as link. So what do you think I can do about this?

OK, there may be some issue with those links...
Please, open regedit and check the value called avast! in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and values Avast4ProgramFolder and Avast4DataFolder in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0

What is their content?
Thanks.

Huh, the value in the "Run" key doesn't look good... :(

You know what? We'll probably install Norwegian version of Vista here and have the problem simulated.

Alright, we have it simulated and will fix it in the next program update.
The work around (before the new version is released) is easy - just do not change the default install folder.

Btw, "Program Files" and the localized version of it (Programfiler, Programmi, etc.) are the same thing - there's only one folder on the disk in Vista, called "Program Files", the rest are just "aliases" - so you won't really lose anything.
