I set up avast! Mac Edition on last Sunday on iMac G4 with OS X 10.4. This machine is an used (before me). In time of first background scan avast! found one virus and 113 warnings. There is a long list about scanned files, where I can see report only abvout infected file(s)? Another interesting question: have anybody found virus on own system? What type of?
Reason of qusetion: we sell avast! in Hungary, but here are a geroup of mac users who says that Mac haven't any viruses... They cannot say any other. :-))

Hallo, in Preferences, it's possible to specify "Display also files which are OK". Otherwise, only warnings and viruses will be displayed (but that's probably your case).

In case that the list is pretty long (but 113 items for the whole drive isn't too much), you can try this:
- Close Scan" and then, click in menubar "File" -> "Save Current Scan Report".
- After this, you can process the list as you wish, for example cat ~/my_scan_report | grep -v "err 13", etc...

these rumours have come probably from the pre-MacOS X era (but there were viruses too, few dozens, for MacOS <=9).
last months, some technical proof-of-concept letters (oriented against macos x) appeared on vx sites, and we can expect even malware that can work natively on both powerpc and intel platforms. thus, thinking "i have macos - i'm pretty safe" isn't the best bet nowadays.

Yeah. It's very important, interesting and challenging question. I need some practical experiences, because Mac-users needs datas, names and times now. I think, the best way of persuasion to give experiences, e.g. "I cleaned Melissa macro-virus from my OS-X Mac last weekend".
Because now proceed a dispute with Mac-fans, we collect all experiences in this theme. Yes, we know, that the danger is "ante portas" for Mac too, like Windows-based PC, now they (Mac-fans) are in false dreams, as grows the Mac-users area, as the dangers are coming...

on-demand scans always take time, this depends on your particular disk contents. having scanned half of your drive in 30minutes is nothing unusual...

PowerPC 750 is a G3 class Processor so that could also be cause of the slowness

Yesterday avast! found an JS.FEEBS virus on our iMac. I know, that's an PC virus, I don't know, how arrived (it's an used machine), but there is. Somebody knows any other specifically "for Mac" virus? Please reply, we're waiting news, because now we starting hungarian selling of avast! for Mac.

as an antivirus company, we cannot spread malware samples. But, there are few dozens of latest MacOS specific malware in our repository, for example Anti, ChinaTalk, Code252, Code327, Horse, Safari Expl, Niqtana, Inqtana, Leap, Mdbf, Weapox, Zuc ... stating that "there's no malware for Mac" is simply not true (and i doubt whether it was in the mid-90s when this rumour started to spread .

Macintosh Computer will be a new target for criminals & idiots in the near future. Cracking & Hacking of Apple iPhones & iPod Touch is contributing to the issue. As these people gain experience while writing code to breach OSX operating system's security. There is a need to prepare for the worst case scenario, no longer can fan boys live in denial of virus/malware. If they are intelligent open minded free thinkers they have and will prepare.

You can gain some speed by adding more RAM. Only 256 MB is really crippling your Mac; Tiger (OS 10.4+) needs at least 512 MB to be reasonably happy. You should be able to max out your Mac with 1GB RAM. I suggest removing the 256 MBs and replacing with two 512 MB chips. Shouldn't be expensive.

There were In the wild malware for OS 8-9 (in the mid 90s like Zilog said) but most of the OS X malware is Proof of concept however the DNSChanger trojan is really out there, it pretends to be a video codec installer.

So there is Malware out there spreading, but the likelihood that you will be infected is still so small that most users do not run AV software. Avast is a nice insurance against any future Malware though
