problems with email
« on: December 24, 2007, 10:36:05 PM »
can you help.....I have installed Avast 4.7 Home Edition, but i can now not receive or send emails without exiting the programme and re-starting it.
I have Windows Vista, and use Windows mail, as it was already installed on my PC.
I am at my wits end. This is the Third anti-virus software I have used and still cant send emails. I have used Norton 360, and Trend PC-Cillin, both of which have been un-installed and computer re=started. I have switched off the scanning facility and all the boxes are ticked, e.g. send mail immediately.
So am totally at a loss.
 use Windows Vista
Avast 4.7 Home edition
Version 4.7.1098
VPS 071219-0 19/12/2007
Intel Pentium (R) 945GM
1.99 GB RAM
Connetc to internet by Wireless Network
Windows mail is my email sender
System was working until i upgraded to Norton 360. It had |Norton already installed, but not 360
Dont get any error messages

Is any part of Norton Antivirus installed? It will conflict with avast...
You can't use Symantec products (antivirus) at the same time as any other antivirus...

What errors or messages are you getting with this "I can't send emails" ?

Are you able to receive emails ?

Does your ISP use SSL/TLS (secure email) email ?

I'm afraid Norton can be a real pig to remove (old version) I don't know about the Norton 360 version though.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Again I don't know if this will work with Norton 360.

all of Norton 360 has been un-installed. I log onto windows mail, and when i send emails it sits in the outbox and then just sits there. I then have to close windows mail, then re-open it. It then sends the email. I can receive emails, but dont get any error messages at all.

just used the tool supplied, and still no joy.  I have sent a test message and it is still sitting in the outbox.

Hmmm... It could be Trend PC-Cillin though... or a firewall issue.
Which is your email provider (@what?)? Does your email use SSL connection (like GMail)? Look at all David's questions...

avast or any other antivirus that does not use a plugin can't scan the encrypted traffic of emails (SSL). You'll need to use a 3rd party tool called Stunnel and configure both Stunnel and avast Internet Mail provider to have your emails scanned (like any user of GMail that downloads it through POP3). If you search the board for GMail and/or Stunnel you'll find the configurations that you need. Now I'm on Linux and does not have the links to tell you...

I suspect that avast may be causing the problem here.

If your outgoing mail is using port 25 and it needs asecure connection then avast will prevent the connection every time.

avast assumes that all port 25 outbound email connections are not secured (as is the general mail standard) and attempts to scan them by default.  If they are secured avast gets in the way.

So, if you use a secured (SSL or TLS) outbound SMTP connection then you need to go to the SMTP tab of the Internet Mail provider and turn off outbound scanning.

the port is 465 outgoing and 995 incoming. These settings were issued by Sky Broadband. The boxes stating "This server requires secure connection are both ticked.

If that is the case then avast shouldn't be scanning your secure email and as such wouldn't be responsible for any secure email problem. Unless of course you have added the SSL ports to those redirected/monitored by avast, like in the image example where I have added another port to the SMTP ports.

So have you modified the redirected ports in avast ?
