Well, I read your post.

I downloaded the file to uninstall avast.

I went offline.

I ran the program.

Reboot

I ran the MCPR file.

Reboot

I ran the avast install file.

Reboot

Got the same results. It installs.  Asks if I want to schedule a boot scan.
I say no - as it has done one 4 times now. and then my desktop is there with the avast icon - but no blue ball in the sys tray.

Had lunch.

Took my cold meds.

Came back here.

Where is this most recent version of avast? How come I don't get that in a download?

How to
avast! and Windows Vista

Solution
avast! runs perfectly on Windows Vista, but there are currently two requirements:

1. avast! must be version 4.7.942 or newer.
2. avast! must be uninstalled prior to upgrade of operating system.

----------------------------------------------------------

should I try that? or just go get some other program?

Bought this machine in oct. at Best Buy. Very happy with it. Hate Vista.
Acer Aspire 4400+
Vista and IE7

I THINK that the machine had Norton on it originally. I THINK I used the Norton clean uninstall before McAfee. Maybe that was in another life, brother.

I got rid of McAfee because I could not figure out how to change my home page/disable Mcafee's homepage protection. I spent WEEKS looking for that answer. No response from M other than go to Tools.......

What do I do now?

Thank you for being there.
Thank you for answering my questions.
There is nothing like a pc problem to make you feel completley inadequate.

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
The best things in life are free.

I downloaded the remove Nav and then looked in programs for Symantec or Nav. Neither shows up there.
I tried to run the program anyway but it asks what I want to remove and I don't remember what it was called. I do remember using the clean up files that come with Mcafee. Wouldn't that have removed them?

I just ran the repair tool in programs and clicked on the icon on the desktop. The silver box opens and agin it's disabled.

BUT   I can click on the buttons. It has downloaded something and now I have a 2 messages in the warning log.

1/11/08 8:21:40  appl=3160  Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return Code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.

1/11/08 8:49:58  appl=3288 Same Message

Does this help?
