Avast software completely slowed my iMac

Just bought the Premium Security for Mac. This made everything on my computer run like molasses. I called for a refund that the person on the phone tried to tell me I needed different software and the my computer was likely too old (it isn't). I declined to try a different software because a company that takes my money for premium software for Mac then tries to tell me I should download different software does not have itself together. Really wish I could find a virus protection that would work.
