Into FF settings you can set it as the default browser.
On Vista, there is an entry in Control Panel to set the Standard Programs.

There are some applications that don't take any notice of your default settings and call IE to the party and there isn't much you can do in those cases (this gets right up my nose).

You can confirm FF is your default browser as on occasions a program update might revert the default. In Firefox Tools, Options, Advanced, General tab and click the Check Now button, see image.

I'm not Tech but I'd link to the official site when I introduce an addon.  Most of them are in Mozilla official site, though.  You can google them by typing "Adblock site:addons.mozilla.org", for example, or simply using the search engine there.

You can start with AdBlock Plus and NoScript.

Don't forget that the Topic with all the add-ons is a relatively old one but many are still there and on the Mozilla site. The idea of the topic (quite a large one) is to get an idea of what others are using and you will see a lot of duplication of the better ones. Like AdBlock Plus and NoScript, CookieSafe (as I mentioned in one of your other topics).

When you decided what you want use the Get Add-ons process that I mentioned in your other topic as that only goes to the official Mozilla addons site.
