Want to install AVAST

Hi

please move this post to the correct place if it is in the wrong place, I am new to this... I want to remove Norton Anti virus and install AVAST instead but Norton will not delete from my computer even if I remove it from my programs, this in turn prevents me from installing AVAST, can someone point me in the right direction? thanks in advance.
