About avast!...
« on: January 17, 2009, 08:13:20 PM »
Hi folks, another brand new user.

My first post here will be about the "About avast!..." popup that's permanently on my screen, at the bottom near the clock. Not sure how it got there, maybe I R clicked and choose "About", not sure, but I can't figure out how to make it go away.

see this screenshot

Hope someone can help ..

Update- OK, I restarted and that message is gone :-)

Yes, as with many windows applications you have to restart/reboot the system for changes to take effect.

There is a workaround to these graphical artefacts remnants of menus, etc. that you could give a try.
Edit avast4.ini using Notepad [Common] section, add the following line to the section SunbeltKPFHack=2, save the file, you will be prompted by the avast! self-defence module if this is OK answer Yes.

I thought that was fixed in the latest Build: version Dec2008 (4.8.1296)?

I know it was happening on my system but that update fixed the problem for me.

So did I, but I don't see it in the version history, though since this is a minor issue it didn't feature in the list.

darn, it happened again, this time I R clicked and choose Program Update. You can see it in this screenshot.

I tried that fix using Notepad (adding the SunbeltKPFHack=2) and went to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini , but when I open DATA, I don't see avast4.ini in there.

I don't see avast4.ini in there.
Maybe you need to disable Hide protected operating system files and enable View hidden files and folders to manage the file(s).

To manage the file, temporarily disable the avast self defense module:
1. Right click the 'a' blue icon on system tray.
2. Programs settings > Troubleshooting (tab)
3. Disable self defense module

OK, found it. In Notepad, I changed Files Type from txt to All Files, and there it was. Opened it and scrolled down to the bottom and added that code, clicked Save.

Guess I'll reboot now and see what happens.

Say, with Avast 4.8, do I need to manually update? Reason I ask is that I heard an audible message (volume was low and I couldn't quite make it out) saying something about it updating.

Allright, that seems to have fixed my problem! I also found where I had automatic updates enabled.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it!

OK folks, the problem is still, it just changed locations.

Look at this: I went in to a Folder and R clicked to make a  New Folder. Now I have that "Folder" on my screen, just like I had the "About Avast".

This has never happened before installing Avast. really hope someone can help.

<snip>

The I scrolled down to the bottom may be the reason.

If you didn't add it to the correct section of the avast4.ini then it would have no effect whatsoever.

The line has to be added to the [Common] section (as Tech mentioned), after the [Common] heading and before the next [Section Title].

Whoops! OK, I found that (Common) section and put that code in the right place.

I'll keep you posted if I have any other issues. Thanks for the help!
