Avast! freezes.....
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:31:33 PM »
Hello everyone...i've just read a similar topic on the forum, but it didn't relly help me at all....i know that every pc has it's configuration,but...my problem is as follow...from time to time, when i right click on an icon,or i try to open a program, avast's blue ball is freezing...and few seconds after,if i click anywhere on the screen, windows explorer stop responding and crashes...i found on a site a "solution",and i disabled all the IE's add ons...it work, for a day,no problem at all...(i know, seems a stupid thing, but it worked...for a day :)...)after that,my problem still remains..my OS is vista premium SP1,and beside avast,it stayed only CIS,only the firewall, defence+ in training mode...in fact,i removed CIS to see if it was the problem...nope,not it...before i have had McAfee(with my Acer laptop),and Kaspersky...i removed them with their "special" uninstalers...i've searched even the registry...nothing...I'm using KAV now, another 6 months license, but believe me,i REALLY REALLY like a lot Avast!,and i want it bad.. :)...
Thank you for your patience and for your answers...any idea is very very welcome...thanks again.

Seems that some remains of McAfee or Kaspersky are conflicting with avast. Or even CIS...

Yeah, you said that you used the removal tools for McAfee and Kaspersky with the removal tools, but I can't really tell if you did the same with CIS or not, or if you're still using it?

Sounds like you're only using the firewall module, which should be fine.

Maybe an uninstall of Avast using avast's removal tool http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html, then re-installation might fix it?

The "funniest" thing is i've have had before this acer,a compaq presario laptop...and i've tried a tone of AV on it...avast! never, never had any issue on that brand,compaq...damn,it seems i must throw away this shiny, brand new Acer Aspire PIECE OF GARBAGE..i have the feeling that it's only its fault,in the end..... >:(

Thanks for your reply,but...the problem will remains, that's for sure... :'(

Are you using Acer's image of Vista, or did you blow it away and install a clean version (I'm just trying to narrow things down)?

If you have SP1 for Vista, I assume that the rest of your updates are ok.

How about downloading Hijackthis http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html and posting a log here?  That way, we might be able to see if there are any other programs still lurking around...

Yes,i know,i was forgot to mention about avira (it's without real protection, only as a demand scanner)...already tryied avast without it,the problem remains...(and btw,kav doesn't have any problem with avira..)

Avira is a resident not on-demand scanner and as such loads low level drivers and it is these which can cause conflict. These conflicts could present themselves as the freezes you are seeing as the drivers conflict.

Just disabling the resident services doesn't disable the loading of low level drivers.

...Precisely.

As DavidR explains, it's possible that Avira is causing the problem.  An unistall (or using their removal program located on this page http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html) Might help.

Get rid of windows vista and use windows xp more stable than vista and avast works no problem ;D
