Just had the worst news possible...AVAST is discontinuing support for Win 98 and Win 98 SE at the end of 2009.  I'm dead in the water.   >:( :o :'(

Sadly,
Lida

And where did you get this news, the only official notice was something on the web site some time ago that support would be at least to the end of this year (2009) ?

That hasn't been updated or a final date confirmed as far as I'm aware. One senior Alwil menber has posted his personal thoughts that support for avast 4.8 is likely to continue for 6-12 months after avast 5.0 is released (which can't be used by win9.x or winME). If that turns out to be true then that would by association mean support for win9.x would also continue as it currently is in 4.8.

So all is not lost, but it really is time to start looking to replace win9.x as there are fewer and fewer applications supporting it and more so security applications. Even MS the creator dropped it many years ago.

I installed Avast 5 beta 3 on my old PC with Pentium 4, 128 MB Ram

I had no problem, except it became slow

So, I installed Comodo Internet Securities

Now its better

Did you not read the topic's title, Lidarose has win98 and as such can't install avast 5 as old OSes aren't supported. It isn't an issue about old systems, but one of Old OSes.

We all know its old, but for some it isn't an option.

They didn't come to get advice on updating their OS, but to get help installing avast on win98.

There is an unofficial real-time scanner for ClamWin: ClamSentinel.

ClamSentinel is an Open Source project and works on Windows 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7.
