New Version
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:52:56 PM »
I got an email from CNET saying that there is a version  Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.377
but when I click on program update for AVAST it says I'm up to date.
How come its not updating???? The new update came out Jan. 19th and my current
version is 4.8.

Currently you need to download the new version setup and install it over the old version. The auto update won't work - http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download ;)

Alwil says it shouldn't be necessary to uninstall 4.8 first. Sometimes this works, but some people have had trouble doing it that way. I downloaded the Uninstall Utility and ran in Safe Mode, restarted, then installed 5. Went without a hitch.

I tried installing the new version AVAST without uninstalling the older one.
It looked like it worked ok but I see 2 problems.
1. I no longer see the message at the bottom of my saying that the message was scanned
by AVAST and is now virus free.
2. When I right click on a file to can it with AVAST a window comes up but nothing
happens.
I was able to fix the email problem but found another problem.
When I click to check for updates it brings a window up but nothing happens.
What shall I do now????
Should I uninstall AVAST????

1. that wasn't a default option in 4.8 'Show detailed info on performed actions' the On-Access Scanner messages. There were more questions on the forum about hoe to get rid of those from tweakers who didn't know what it did.

2. is this the windows you are talking about, see image. That is the result of the scan.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

I used the uninstall program to remove the newest version and after I reinstalled
the new version everything is now working fine!!!!
Is it ok to have the ask me when an update is available????
It's putting a triangle on the AVAST ICON.

Ask for program updates, but I would advise Auto for virus signature updates, though there is nothing to stop you doing it, but it is going to be asking a lot ;D

Usually the yellow triangle is one or more of your Shields are stopped, see image. Go into the Real-Time Shields section and check what isn't running. Or click the Fix Now button (or turn on link) in the Summary section.

I would also say auto updates is preferable (at least for the virus database...)

@David,

the yellow triangle (and statusbar) will also appear if updates are set to manual, it is one of the things monitored.
