Help Upgrade won't go away
« on: February 26, 2010, 11:13:58 PM »
Hello folks, I have been using the free edition for some time without any problems, lately (at least once  a day) I get a request to upgrade to the paid edition, it locks up my system and starts a scan, if I click pause and then close it restarts in a few minutes, if I click terminate then close it turns off my free edition and warns me that I'm unprotected , I have the free edition set to prompt me when upgrades are available and download them regularly, at this time I'm on a fixed income and out of work so I can't afford to purchase the upgrade but would like to continue with the free edition, thank you for any help to make this go away

Hi flyfsher! Maybe it'll sound hillarious to you, but what if the time and date in your system, which are out of adjusment due to e.g. drained battery that is sustaining correct time and date in all computers are causing this Avast! strange behaviour? It's quite possible, cause when you accidentally set current date to, let's say 2014, your Avast! might be misled and prompt a message telling you that your license is invalidated or that your version of virus definitions is out of date. So, check first if your time and date in your system is up-to-date, simply by clicking with left mouse button twice on current time in the sytem tray. Hope this helps :)
Best regards.

Hi  :)

Avast 4.8 free

Then I'd have thought it's probably the Avast 5 Free update message that you keep seeing   ::)

You can stay with - Avast 4.8 .. For a little while longer if you really want to   :-\
OR
You can go with the New - Avast 5  8)

Although! .. One Top Tip!
Don't Do The Update To - Avast 5  :(
Best To...
Completely Uninstall Avast 4.8 - & - Then Install Avast 5  ;)

1) Uninstall - Avast 4.8
2) Run The Avast Uninstall Utility From Safe Mode
3) Install - Avast 5

Running the Avast Uninstall Utility from Safe Mode
It just helps ensure that all of the old Avast 4.8 has gone from your computer .. Before installing the New Avast 5  :-\
As when bits of old security software are left behind .. It can sometimes cause problems with the New security software.

I know it can be really scary doing something on your computer that you've never done before.
Going Into Safe Mode!  :o
It is scary the first time you do it.
But once you know what to expect.. You Should Be Fine!   8)

Found Something For You
  ;D

How To Boot In To Safe Mode .. Using The F8 Key
http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/how-to-start-a-windows-os-based-computer-in-safe-mode

Note: Some computers may use a different F key to boot into Safe Mode  ::)
HP .. Mine uses F8
Packard Bell .. Used to have one that used F5
Dell .. I'm sure someone said it was F2

If In Doubt! .. Check your computer Manual  ;)

Hi Gopher John  :)

I have a Dell, and it's F8 for the Boot Mode menu.

I think most computers use the - F8
However!
Now & Again .. You'll get the odd one that uses another F Key   :-\

Drives Me Crazy!  ::)
If they all just stuck to using the F8 .. It would make life so much easier.

No, that's the standard Windows key...  It doesn't matter what hardware you're running it on, F8 is always it.  I think you're speaking of keys that get into the BIOS, or boot menu, or other things (before the booting of windows) that absolutely change between hardware manufacturers.
