using 100 % CPU
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:11:48 PM »
Hi , I was downing a large file via SSL and noticed my pc ground to halt beacuse the avast ant-virus service was using 100 % CPU as soon as the download stops it is fine again ??

Any ideas on how I can fix this ??

Did you try using .454 ? As im not sure but Logos asked to make the scan to make less hot the processor. ;)

Edit : From Vlk your problem seem to be fixed on it.

And new in v5.0.454
- added access keys – the program can be easily now controlled via keyboard
- solved a problem with the “I only connect to the Internet using a dial up modem” update setting
- better handling of errors in case of real-time shield actions
- improved compatibility with Apple BootCamp
- improved default firewall rules
- low priority scans now use much less CPU (but run accordingly longer)
- components of the avast setup/update process are now digitally signed

Your welcome mate.

Feed back if that version fixed out your problem. And if its does, mark its as [fixed in 5.0.454]

no, this didn't concern the resident shield but a first full manual scan when writing data to the persistence cache.
This said, for the OP's issue, if it's an ssl download, only the file system shield (as opposed to the web shield) can be scanning... just make sure that the extension(s) of the file(s) you're downloading are excluded from the file shield scope.

aye its still not working avastAVC.exe is using btween 80 % and 100% CPU when downloading anything ???

making it impossible to use my PC whilst downloading, as soon as its finished its fine again.

Just checked task manager and it scurrently using 10,904 K memory.  Wil try another download and see if that increases as well as the cpu.  The memory has increased to 13,380 and cpu up to 25 but my system monitor is claiming between 80 & 100% ???

I have even stopped the web shield and file system shield and it is no better ???

Firstly if as you say you are downloading this using SSL, e.g. HTTPS, then the web shield (running under avastSvc.exe) doesn't get involved at all as it doesn't monitor HTTPS traffic, being encrypted it cant so it doesn't attempt to do so. So there is something else in the mix.

As you mention currently in your download cpu is only 25% (is this task manager of another source for this quantity), but your system monitor (what application is this) is reporting 80-100%, surely not for the same process using only 25% ?

Having stopped the web shield and seen no difference, basically confirms what I said in paragraph 1.

I have now taken avast off and downloads are running fine :)  Not sure if I will put it back on now as my pc is running a lot quicker with a different product installed on it !!

I have a quad core processor with 64 bit windows 7 professional,  so I assume that system manager wasn't reporting the CPU usage correctly as when it ws running at 100% it took an age to do anything on the PC and the fans were going mental ??? But now it is running normal again.

Thanks to everyone for your help on this issue so far :)

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have installed, including firewall ?

How are you actually downloading this file, download manager, from a browser and https link, P2P (if so what client) or other means (whatever that might be) ?
During the download is the avast icon rotating (especially if it is indicating 100% cpu) ?

Try opening the avastUI and Real-time Shields, File System Shield so that you can monitor any activity, and try starting the download again and see if you can see what is actually being scanned ?
