Firewalls?
« on: March 26, 2010, 10:35:15 AM »
Hi there,

I have a few questions about Comdo 4 firewall.

1. Is it compatible with XP & Vista?
2. Is it a standalone or bundled with AV or IS?
3. How big a hogger is it on OS resources?
4. Is it a freeware or trial?
5. Any better options than Comodo?

Thanks!
OS: W7 Pro 32bit.

Protection:  Avast 12.3 Free, MBAM.

1. Is it compatible with XP & Vista?
Yes.. But there are different versions for 32bit & 64bit.
32 bit   http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/xml_binaries/cis/cis_setup_x86.msi
64bit    http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/xml_binaries/cis/cis_setup_x64.msi

2. Is it a standalone or bundled with AV or IS?
You get an option to install their AV, Toolbar and demo live support. Don't install those. Install firewall as standalone.

3. How big a hogger is it on OS resources?
It uses <10mb Memory & ~0 CPU in my 32bit vista machine.

4. Is it a freeware or trial?
It is free for home usage. But if you want live support, you will have to pay. Support from forum is free.

5. Any better options than Comodo?
Many users did not like Comodo because of its complexity. But v4 is much simpler to use and has sandbox facility. No other free firewall have these features. It is the most complete firewall with HIPS in my opinion. But you may try
PC Tools Firewall Plus

Online Armour Free

Private Firewall

ZoneAlarm Free

sg09 what is sandbox facility.....does one really need it....I apologize about my ignorance, trying to learn machines at this age, when dementia has started to pop in.

Thanks again.

yep, I forgot about that... very nice one...

Not at all....
sg09 what is sandbox facility.....does one really need it...
You can run an application, which you consider as insecure in Sandbox. Running in a sandbox means running in a virtual environment. Any change caused by the application will be erased after a reboot. So, for secure browsing you can use sandbox, so any browser hijack type things will not be permanent. For normal users it may not be worth, but it is necessary for security purpose...

Thanks sg09, Pondus & Yokenny,

Frankly speaking sandbox seems to be a bit complicated for an old person like me. Tried it once didn’t really get it. May be some research & reading might help.

Comdo vs. Outpost Free…….which is more versatile & effective as a Firewall, with minimal conflicts.

If want a simpler firewall with basic functions, I will suggest you to go for ZoneAlarm.
Among OutPost and Comodo, I think Outpost will be simpler, can't confirm 'coz I used Outpost a log time back . May be it has a learning mode unlike Comodo. But wail for others to comment on it.
One more thing if you turn of the Defence+ feature of Comodo it will be simpler..

both r very good products!
comodo is much more flexible, if u know what to do. (should have quite a bit experience)
outpost, i would advice 2 users not that advanced, who don't need high felxibility (eg. only using browser & email)
