Avast 5.0 problem
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:38:46 PM »
I'm sick of this, sorry to start this way.
I usually had avast 4.8 (free) which worked fine, afer that I installed avast 5.0 (also free). Today I had to go back to a certain sytem restore point since my screen settings were messed up, set to 4 bits etc etc...

So I chose the most recent checkpoint, the installation of avast 5.0.
I restored teh checkpoint and noticed that no Anitvirus was installed (logical since avast 4.8 was deleted and 5.0 wans't yet installed.
I installed avast 5.0. I saw that the service wasn't running on first startup. it said 'UNSECURED' or something. There was a big button 'fix this' next to it, I clicked on it, nothing happened.
Under that there was a button resart system, once again nothin happened. I went to the registration part of the program, it said registered in green letters, untill next month. I could still click on register.. I clicked and it told me that my license was about to run out in 0 days.
Before the system restore point it runned just fine.
I was furious, so I tried to uninstall 5.0 and reinstall 4.8, it failed at some point because the registration key the site gave me was wrong or something. Now I reinstalled 5.0 without working shields or anything. I do have other virus prgrams to keep me safe though.

Can someone PLEASE help me ?

I'm not stupid I do ICT studies, this thing is just f***** up.

So please post any security related programs that are on the machine with the problem..!
You mentioned something about another AV in your first post...!!?
Also firewalls and other stuff would be interesting.

so if Adaware (which I mentioned in the post above) isn't considered as an protection program, there is none.
And btw Adaware worked with avast 5.0 untill I had to reset the sytem through a system restore point.
firewalls: simply windows firewall, the one from adaware

but I don't see what's the problem now, all those programs worked nicely together and now after the sytem restore avast 5.0 doesn't work (I can install it but the ervice isn't running)
and the serial for avast 4.8 won't get accepted which is awkward wince I got it from this goddamn site.

I still don't see the problem

1. Use this in safe mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
2. Reinstall avast 5.0.545. (I would drop adaware first...)
3. Next time you use the system restore, disable the avast self defence first..! (Don't forget to reenable it afterwards..!!!)

First, uninstall avast in Add/Remove Programs, then use the uninstall utility in safe mode as asyn suggested. To disable the avast self-defense, go to settings in the upper-right hand corner, and click the troubleshooting tab. Then uncheck the option that says 'enable self-defense module.' Also, Adaware has been known to conflict with some AV's, so I wouldn't use that. A better program would be Malwarebytes. System Restore causes problems with avast, so I recommend yo don't use it until the next program update, you can read more about it in these forums. Hope this helps :)
