updates expiration
« on: August 19, 2004, 01:53:29 AM »
I just got a notice that my update license was about to expire, but in my 4.1 home edition registration it lists the products (workstation).. the type ( home) & the expiration ( never)
updates expireation (August 1 2004). My question is ..is this really expired or is it just a warning? Also if it says it will never expire...why is it? ???

Leslee, the program (engine) does not 'expire', you can use it forever.
But the virus database updates (VPS) and the program updates expire in 14 months. After that, you should register again, for free again, but that is the policy here.  ;)

what timing I was just about to make this same post today
I knew I would be checking my avast forum to see how this wonderful product is holding up against this new SP2 (2 as in "2 confusing")

OK I see you reply to how there is only 14 months of free vps updates \and I need to register -again- but you could do me and I think all a favor by x-plaining this a bit deeper
If I put my registration number in won't it recognize me as already having a trial key ?
as well I put in my e-mail addy and also got cut off for "already registered"

Please don't say we have to uninstall and start again
Pleaseeeeee Technical say it isn't' :ot soooooo .............?

 mine expires in 2 weeks

Well, we're becoming faster than Shumaker  ;D

If I put my registration number in won't it recognize me as already having a trial key?

I'm not sure, but what I know is that there is two ways to prevent piracy of the keys:
1. a black list (avoiding the updates)
2. a registry trick to avoid uninistalling/installing again with a trial key

As well I put in my e-mail addy and also got cut off for "already registered"
Please don't say we have to uninstall and start again

I'm glad I do not have to say that  ;D
Just register again and post your new key. You do not have to uninstall. Thanks God  8)

Hey techie

 thank you -once again-
(not excluding all the other "Main Brains" here) for
making me feel secure with your advice before i do anything

All went smooth ..........I am now updated for VPS until 2005
guess I was worried over what was probably a typo
it was so 'painless" I also see (as I sit and decide if I should update to SP2) that the Microsoft site lists AWIL /Avast in their top 5 prepared for the sp2 update
I felt proud for you guys

still scared to make the SP2 plunge I still think Micro was VERY shady in the way they are trying to make all their users their personal "beta testers" - if you haven't notice the past 2 weeks every Micro site (including windows update) URGED you to set you update controls to automatic !!

need to check the zone alarm works with it

thanks again

Of course, never do that... Just ask the others SP2 users: Sasha and Bob for instance.
I'm not sure but I think David and Mike are waiting a little...
Read this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=6665;start=0

Decide if I should update to SP2

If you have:
1. Updated your Windows (windows update site)
2. Updated your antivirus and correctly set its protection
3. Use (and update) a good firewall (ZA is one of them)

You do not have to update quickly into SP2.
For common users (not AMD 64 bits, for instance) the level of protection is almost the automatic update and warnings if the protection is disabled or not-functional.

Need to check the zone alarm works with it.

I'm almost sure about this.
Ask Bob. He uses ZA Pro  ;)

I'm holding off on SP2, not so much because of doubts about it (and of course there are some), but because I'm on dialup and it's way too big to download.  And heaven knows when it'll be available on CD -- MS did have a schedule posted for placing orders for all of two days, a couple of weeks ago, but as you've probably seen that was quickly replaced with a "check back later this summer" message.

ZA works like a charm with SP2 as does Avast! Both are recognized. :)
