This is strange ??? I think it should be there, even in the evaluation version. But I could be wrong about this. Are you using Avast version 4.1.418 and vps 434-2?

Eddy, you're not wrong.
It should be there if the icons are merged...
Did you hide any icon? Have you seen an 'i' icon?

Jimn, do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?

Do you like wasting half an hour on nothing?

avast is not nothing...
You should use time to learn anything in computer.
You should be patient... I see no other way.
I don't get more than 5000 posts in less than one hour  ;D

I see probable problems.

Post them here  8)

1) The error message directed me to the "Manual setting of mail protection..." in the Help, so why would I think for a minute that a wizard was going to do the job?

Please, stop blaming with avast and help files. Try, if you can, to be only in the trouble issue, asking directly questions...

2) I did NOT specify to merge the icons (which I had read about in the help) - it just happened!

Strange... I've never heard this before  :-\

3) The context menu on rt-clicking the icon that is there has no option to generate the VRDB.

You should 'merge' the icons to see the option.
On the 'a' icon (no merged) you won't see VRDB option.

Also please remember if you aren't happy with the best free AV program available for home use, it's fully removable. It would be a mistake to do so however, the choice is totally up to you.
Even if you decide to remove Avast from your computer and choose another AV program and then run into trouble, you can still come back here for help. Most of us have owned the others and have chosen Avast!.

Here is my context menu (I assume it will show up here.
Note that there is no mention of VRDB in any option.

I'd say the VRDB ("i") icon is hidden by WinXP in the tray area. Try to expand the icons using the arrow.

Since I have my answer to the thread title it looks like I should start other thread for other 'problems'.

But I do want to be clear about 1 thing - I have every intention of giving this product a proper evaluation because I have heard it is the best and so would like to use the best myself.

However, to do this I have to rely on the Help.
You can call it "blaming the Help' but in fact it is my belief that I should use the Help FIRST, before posting questions in a forum like this.
So far I have not found the Help to be helpful... I now know that "Schedule boot-time scan" means next boot only but I had no idea that was the case until I was told. I would have thought that the Help, or the dialog that lets one specify this, would have said so.

Thank you all for your time.
I will start another thread regarding the absence of the "i" icon on my WinXP Pro system.

Your question is already being answered.
I't's a good idea when you post to refresh your browser so you can see all the post's and always go back to your previous post. By doing that, you'll always see any new posts that have occured since your last visit. :)

Or do as me. Set internet cache space to 0 and enable "check on every visit" or whatever it is called in the browser you are using ;)

Yeah, I agree... There is always something to improve.
Help files and display information are, in some cases, not intuitive. There are other examples and, like you, I think could be better wrote (for instance: Silent Mode, error messages...).  8)
