Computer Slow After Avast Free Program Update 5.1.864
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:34:25 AM »
I've enjoyed using Avast for the past six months. It's been excellent till now. I dont want this to be perceived as an "Avast sux" post. I noticed right away that my computer slowed in loading and running apps after the 5.1.864 update. Just about all actions were slower. Upon every reboot, things got worse. It got to the point where even to boot to complete desktop was about 12 minutes.

Everything took at least ten times longer to occur. I started playing around with switching things on and off. It came down to Avast. If I turn off the shields, things go back to speedy. I am going to uninstall Avast and reinstall previous version of 5.0.677. I'll report status after.

Windows 7 64. 4GB Ram.

Yeah. I read other posts suggesting that. I am in the middle of Linux install right now. After I get all my partitioning set up on sdb (it's split between NTFS and Linux Mandriva) I will do a complete image backup. Then I will give the new Avaast version a try. Thanks.

I have the same problem... and it's really annoying!

Just updated Avast from 5.0.677 to 5.1.864 and the start menu (icons) cache extremely slowly now. In fact a lot of things run much slower (and I have a high end system). Turning OFF Real-Time Shields fixes the issue temporarily, but when reinstalling and updating to version 5.1.864 the problem comes back.

Is there a new update in the works by AVAST that will fix this?!

Hi, I have the same problem (slow icon loading for sure, possibly some keyboard lag too or may be a coincidence).

Is this going to be fixed in an update?  If so I'll probably put up with it rather than roll back to a previous version.

Cheers

Ah ok cheers,  I didn't want to try it because it said 5.0.874 which is older than my current version.

If it's beta of a new version then I'll probably hang fire until it's released officially. But thanks for advice and good to hear the fix is on its way.

It's just a link typo.
Like igor said: 'What matters it's the package you install' (kinda like that)

I recommend you to download it since actually fixes a lot of problems (and can solve some of your issues) of .864 build and is pretty stable.

OK just installed and rebooted.

Definitely speeded up icon loading and seems to load web pages quicker - although that could be just the time (my isp i think may do some traffic management up til midnight).

Thanks

I have the same problem... I had the free edition of avast about 1 year. And couple days ago, i have fond a licence on torrents  ;D and after the update to 5.1 version, my antivirus stays more time disable (by me), than active... I can`t listen music, or watching a movie... All goes in frames and is very annoying! I put on exception list my torrent, my winamp etc. i even try every option one by one to see wich is going bad, but nothing... just disable antivirus works.

I think i`m going back to free edition.

PS: Excuse me for my bad english!

So you are annoyed that after using a using a pirated/cracked key in what is effectively an illegal installation of the Pro or AIS version and you wonder why you had problems.

Using cracks/keygens, etc. is aside from any legal/moral issue (stealing from avast) they frequently cone with uninvited guests.

This is even more crazy when avast provide an excellent free product that you used and then you tried to deny revenue by using a pirated key for the paid products that effectively support the free version.

I thought it was a good idea to tell you my problems (i am not the only one). I just google it and there are many persons who complain about this version.

I am using avast for 2-3 years ago. And this is the first time when i am really dissapointed
