I have no problems with Active X and actually think it's been a boon to the computer world. Just because something has been attacked a lot doesn't mean it's bad. It could mean it's good and very widely used so becomes a target.
Sure. Agree. But the technology of using such a swiss cheese, full of holes, is difficult to understand. Technology could have passed through it as a "bad experience", imho.

While I agree with you, Tech, explain to us why anything Adobe is still in use?
Their programs, as a whole, are so full of holes they couldn't even be considered swiss cheese.

As for Reader (which most people use) - absolutely no idea. Ditched it for everyone I install a computer for a loooong time ago. They usually ask whether it has "Adobe" installed, I say yes and they happily use the alternative reader (usually PDF XChange Viewer) or Foxit on really low spec boxes.

PDF XChange Viewer and Foxit Reader have far less security bug problem compare to Adobe Reader every time we get another Adobe Reader patch update, I strongly prefer to stay right away from Adobe Reader because they have to many problem patching their security update just stick to PDF XChange Viewer or another product that has far less problems.

If you use the Google Chrome Browser, you don't need anything else just open the pdf in your browser.
It's built into Chrome and safe to use.

I have never opened PDFs in a browser since I knew that that could be exploited (many years now) and is still something that I wouldn't advise, no matter how chrome supposedly deals with them to make it safe.

In downloading them for off-line reading they will be scanned by the web shield and file system shield.

AS this poll show not everybody is using chrome.

Maybe this will explain how Chrome does it:

lol yeah, I've opened pdf in browsers tens and tens of time, using mostly Adobe reader plugin, even in Chrome (although I recently switched to the integrated reader there but that's not my point... I'll probably switch back to the Adobe version anyway). Whether in Firefox or Chrome, never had a single infection. And on a side note, if a pdf was infected, I can see no reason why it wouldn't be caught by the web shield, just like it would be caught by the FS if saved to disk.

But yes, remains the possible re-routing to bad sites (or any other misbehavior of the browser) when viewing an infected pdf in the browser...okay...I've been using Adobe reader and flash player intensively for years. Heard of the repeated flaws like everyone here, never had a single incident.

I use the Flash Player because you pretty much have to to see everything. I switched to PDF-XChange mainly because it's more lightweight while still retaining all the bells and whistles of the Adobe Reader. I rarely open any PDF's and when I do they're usually downloaded user's manuals.

i normally use firefox but i am a bit disappointed in firefox 4.  Some pages do not load fast like 3 did.  I cannot open pdfs adobe or foxit pdfs in the brower, in firefox 3.016 i could.  Some sites are locking up.

I installed ie9 and i am really impressed.  Do you think Microsoft finally got it right?  it loads super fast, opens pdfs, for websites that have not caught up to 9 yet you can put it in compatibility mode.

Until it gets hacked into  I think i will continue to use it, I do like google chrome but it is very hard to bookmark and backup bookmarks.

One thing that I find funny is that microsoft has been releasing new Versions of Internet Explorer than later on a new version of windows operating system.  IE8 = Windows 7 | IE9 = Windows 8 in 2012 by what i have heard about windows 8.
OS: Windows 11 64-bit
Webbrowser: Mozilla Firefox
PC Specs: Intel i5-12400f, Nvidia RTX 3050, 16gb ram, 1.5TB SSD(s).
