rufous03, which version are you trying to reinstall?
avast latest version is 6.0 and you seem to be installing an old one.

I actually tried clicking on the link in the avast warning message to supposedly take to an avast help page or something on this issue, but the link didn't work and the browser just kept thinking where to go and eventually timed-out.

Whatever version I downloaded from thier site (free version)

Version 6 could be registered internally (Maintenance folder of avast interface).
Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

This is the second time this year avast. im starting to getting tired of you.

This is not a regular occurrence and avast is not alone in having had an issue after a virus signature update. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the hill. I guess I have been fortunate in over seven years of using avast I have never been effected by anything like this.

who needs a regular one? one is enough to make an entire mess.

YES!! An entire mess indeed!  One of my networks of 180 users now has tons of false positives sent to the chest because of this blunder by avast.  An entire IIS site for internal use is simply destroyed.  Yes, I can manually restore the files from the chest, but this is a royal pain in the @$$.
