New Avast scan modes
« on: July 19, 2011, 11:58:54 PM »
Currently avast has four scan modes:
Quick Scan
Full system scan
Removable media scan
Select folder to scan

Personally i would like to see another scan mode: "Vulnerability scan" which checks for outdated and vulnerable plugin's and programmes. I think that this is vital nowadays as keeping all your programmes up to date is very important, think about it, if you keep windows up to date why not keep all your other exploitable software updated. Currently i use secunia to check for updates but i would like to see a "Vulnerability scan" mode in avast. I'm pretty sure that the 165+million avast users haven't got a clue about what an exploit is or aren't keeping there plugins and programmes up to date.

i doubt that the 165+million avast users have heard of secunia.
Custom scan dosen not scan for outdated plugins and programmes.

Keeping plugins and programmes uptodate is a very important, most users think that having an antivirus, firewall and keeping only windows uptodate is all that is ever needed to stay safe. This is sadly not true and creates a false sense of security.

Keeping plugins and programmes uptodate is a very important...

Sure it is, but not the job of an AV, imo.

You are probably right, but i think that avast should include this in their internet securty suite (a suite is more that just an av)

Well, ok. You made your point.
I rather doubt that anything like that will be included, though. ;)

Personally what I don't want to see is avast becoming a bloated pig.

One that tries to be a homogenised, pasteurised, blend of all AVs out there, what a monster that would become.

I don't want avast! to try and become a jack of all trades and master of none. The more diversity that is done away from core business, that of AV protection, the more chance of losing sight of the ball for bells and whistles or gimmicks.

I think there would be a greater chance of losing customers that way than gaining the few that think these gimmicks are a must have.

Avast didn't get 165 million plus users from following the herd. Some of that herd still don't have things which avast does have, that is innovation and not jumping on a passing bandwagon.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.4.6112 (build 24.4.9067.762) UI 1.0.803/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

No doubt part of the reason Kasper costs ~$90.

The people who don't update wont listen to Avast! or anyone else about updating.  Why?  They think a computer is something that should just take care of everything itself.  The see a Java update pop-up, and they habitually ignore it, largely because they don't even understand what Java is and the problems the lack of updates can cause....but when you explain to them, you get 2 sentences in, you can see their eyes glaze over, you have already lost them because what you are talking about requires thinking and time and work.  Something they think a PC should not be about.  It is to them a toy/tool for getting on facebook, playing games, downloading fee music and movies, selling thing on ebay, watching Youtube vidz.  All the points (not coincidently) that manufactures sell PCs to layman consumers with.

By the way, I'll be trying two update checkers in next days on virtual machines first...
SUMo 2.13.6.113 and Update Notifier 1.1.5.133 (without the toolbars... of course).
The best things in life are free.

Well I would like to see the Antivirus do the Antivirus job....That is why I hate Kaspersky..It is bloated with too much junk that shouldn't be there and it creates tons of Temp folders that are full of junk you'd think they are made by a Trojan ..I downloaded and prefer the Avast over the Kaspersky that I paid for and gave it away because everything was all over my computer everywhere, made it a mess...All I wanted was good standalone protection...
If Avast made a different seperate program for computer clean up, and fixing issues caused by services or plugins, and called it somethingdifferent...fine, but I'd rather have the Avast Team working on top virus "protection" and good reliable scans...Just my opinion
   cheers!!!!and safe surfing!!!
