cannot use internet with avast! running

Hi I am a newbie sorry in advance.
I am running Windows Vista Home.
I reinstalled avast! 6.0.1367 internet security after doing a factory restore on my laptop and now I cannot get internet with avast!  :'( running. It is blocking my wireless and cable connection. I have DSL Through AT&T.
I have no idea where to start here, I had this running before my system restore and never had a problem with it.
I do not know how to set up the firewall applications and have tried to read thru it and it just confused me.
I really like avast! and this is why I purchased this product back in April. But now I cannot use the internet without shutting it off. Not really helping me stay protected.
My system is running Norton in the background, I do not know if this has anything to do with my issue.
Anyone that can walk me thru how to setup avast! so I can use it I would be greatly in your debt.

Ok, I can and will uninstall Norton, but even before I activated the Norton it was doing this.
I do not want to be left with NO protection.

You need to run the removal utility for Norton. That's what Asyn pointed to. The simple "uninstall" of Norton may not be enough.

Ok, I can and will uninstall Norton, but even before I activated the Norton it was doing this.
I do not want to be left with NO protection.

Well, let's see...
Before you start, be sure your Vista is on SP2 and fully patched.

1. Download AIS: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
3. Go offline after the reboot.
4. Uninstall Norton.
5. Install AIS with the installer from point one.

I have the current SP2 installed at 2:30am. as well as the newest AIS. installed.. as far as being fully patched I do not know.. I keep having more Microsoft updates appearing as my system was reset to out of box condition yesterday. I had to manually go get the SP2 pack because it kept failing thru update. Probably because so many other things were trying to update at the same time.

Alright. I have gotten as far as using the tool to remove Norton and removing AIS. Now I am about to install AIS again.
I have internet and was still having the issue with avast installed, so I hope reinstall helps this.
Any ideas about settings?
I am at home and not on a network, but I run a wireless modem so that on occasion I can use my laptop in more than just one room.
I generally had it set in the middle ground.. for medium security.
