hi,

benefits are:
- GPS auto enable
- hard reset proof
- disable USB debugging / force internet access when lost or stolen
- can not simply be uninstalled

regards

You might brick your device/lose your warranty doing so. Also if any malware would get to the device that wouldn't be caught for any reason, it might do more damage (the device becomes more open meaning we can do more things but the same applies to all the other applications).

Well.... i maybe was too enthusiastic when using the official HTC Unlock Bootloader procedure. While walking through that routine was easy, i now found out that i still have S-On.
So i am now stuck at the question from Avast!, if i want to S-OFF or if i want to use Recovery Image.
Seems as S-OFF is not an easy option for me, but i am also unsure what i can do with Recovery Image.

Anybody who can tell me how to work with the Recovery Image way?

Recovery way installation will prepare a .zip file with some installation script and data and you should restart your device into recovery mode, choose this .zip file and install it. Sometimes the script will not get the rights for writing the data and installation fails, in this case you can try direct method.

Ok... here i am with root access, glad to have made it.

But....

Tested the sms-commands today, and got stuck.

What i did:
xxxx lost - this did mark the phone as lost and worked perfect
xxxx wipe - this did wipe the phone, deleted all data, and reset to factory.
When booting, i had to go through the complete questionaire from HTC. All fine.
But AntiTheft was disabled after boot !!!
My next command "xxxx locate" was shown as normal sms in the phone. So now the thief knows the password !
avast was not installed, which is ok
the antitheft was installed under the stealth-name i have choosen.
But the system was
- switched off
- not as admin
- no name set up

and yes... i did store and checked the settings in permanent mode....

any help ?

hi i guess you installed via update.zip. did you:
a) set up your settings, enable anti-theft
b) AFTER setting up all your settings, save them hard-reset-proof (update.zip)
c) apply that settings update.zip in recovery mode?

no, direct write.
- Did install anti-theft as root (which did work, it was still available after factory reset)
- Did do all settings
- Did save hard-reset-proof with direct writing method, not recovery image.
- Did use the second option to check the settings, and did get positive feedback that they could be read.

Try the update again.  I just got the update this evening myself.  I think it depends on your time zone and your telephone carrier.
