VLK - As requested a new thread.

Configuration
Avast! Home 4.5. 546
Zone Alarm 5.5.062.000
AdAware SE 1.05
WinXP Home SP2
Office 2000
Broadband
Turnpike Mail Client (http://www.demon.net/downloads/)

My problem started with the upgrade (auto) a couple of weeks ago.  I was unable to send emails and got lots of timeout messages.

Since then I have followed the advice and applied patches and upgraded to where I am.

If I leave 'check outgoing mail' checked then the mail does not get sent and I get a timeout reported in Turnpike and in Avast.

If I don't check this then the mail is sent ok.

Email addresses in turnpike are set as though avast was not there. Avast4.ini has the outgoing and incoming mail servers both set to mail.btinternet.com which is correct.

Hope this makes sense to you.

The biggest difference I see between your setting and mine is this:
 StartSmtp=0
My setting is:
StartSmtp=1
Please see if that makes a difference and let us know.

changed that setting - no different  :(

I did notice that the first time Turnpike runs the mail gets sent (although no message is inserted despite the box being checked) and from then on it times out.

curious.

I take it from the silence that turnpike remains a mystery,

Vlk, please, help us...  :(

Osborneuk, sorry if I'm being repeated, I'm just trying to find a solution...

Try to increase both timeouts (of avast into the Advanced tab of Internet Mail provider settings and of your email account, in Properties of the account, Advanced tab too). You can set both to 600, for instance. If you're on a DSL connection (not dial-up) it shouldn't be necessary a so long timeout anyway...

Do you use any spam killer? Sometimes the spam killer enters in a 'loop' and consume all the timeout. Shutdown it and start it again.

In earlier avast versions mail were routed through the localhost (127.0.0.1) and this would pass through very quickly and/or possibly form a buffer that masked any timeout settings.

timeouts increased:

SMTP command rejected while talking to mail.btinternet.com: DATA
 451 timeout (#4.4.2)

no spam killer running

Curiously - sometimes, just after starting the pc I can actually send messages with the smtp 'check outgoing' checked.  It doesn't however insert any messages into the body of the email or the header.  these only get inserted on incoming mail.  Almost as though it's by-passing avast!.  Then it stops and timeouts appear.

Perhaps it just won't work with Turnpike and the way it sends mail?

Yes, I think someone from Alwil should maybe try to invoke that problem with Turnpike and avast! mail scanner.

Maybe it's really something inside Turnpike that avast! mail scanner doesn't like too much.

i think it must be turnpike 'cos it won't let avast insert an outgoing message either in the text or the header.

Have you already contacted Demon about this?
If so, what is their reaction?

Have you tried to contact Turnpike directly to ask them about this problem?

reply from Turnpike:

This is not an issue ourselves or the software manufacturers seem to have
come accross before. The only solution I can offer you is to disable the
scanning out outgoing mail in Avast as the main concern is generally with
incomming mail. As long as no viruses get by the AV software, you wont
send any.
