Using themes
« on: December 01, 2004, 05:48:02 PM »
When I try to change the theme, Avast crashes.

Can you help me resolving this problem ?

Sincerely.

What OS?
What exact version of Avast?
How are you trying to change the skin?
From what skin to what skin?
Is there an error in Avast's log file? If so what is the exact error?
What other applications are running when it happens? Does the problem stays if you disable them first?

I have avast 4.5.523 running under Windows XP French home edition SP2
I use lcars-avast and I click on "choose theme". Without doing anything, avast crashes. I've send report by e-mail several times.

Upgrade to 4.5.546 and let us know if the problem is solved or not.

I've updated Avast to version 4.5.546 and the problem hasn't disappeared.

Have you already tried a repair of Avast?

And please answer the other questions I have asked.

From the crash report, I can see that the problem occurred when trying to play a sound.
Could you try updating the drivers for your soundcard (if possible, of course)? I'd say it may help.

I'm not sure I can update the driver of my sound card.
It looks strange, because I only have problem with avast when playing sounds.
What can I do else ?

Honestly, I'm not sure...
Do you have avast! sounds enabled or disabled? If they are enabled, try to disable them.

I had several themes : author Alwil and other.
I have suppressed the themes from author different than Alwil, and I don't have any more problem.
I don't know whether it will go one like that, but I hope it.

What do you mean by "suppressed" ? No one else reported such a problem. Actually, I really don't see the connection between your sound problems and skins. The only skin that uses internal sounds is LCARS, and I don't believe that you even tried that one. Skins made by Alwil guy Martin are completely the same like all those made by other skin makers, available in avast! skins download section. Every single skin maker used exactly the same technique and program to make skins, which is SkinBuilder...

Go to Windows Update site, and see if they have some newer drivers for your sound card... if your crashing issue is related to sound drivers, than you have to download latest drivers for your sound card.

First, I've deleted all themes not from Alwil ( including the one which has sound )
I don't have problem any more.
Then, I have downloaded and installed different themes ( eg black liquid, iconic ... ) : no problem.

You're right when you tell me it can come from my sound driver.

Sincerely.

Yes, try that first, because no matter if you leave all those themes or erase them from avast! skin directory, avast! should load correctly. Only one skin at a time is loaded into memory, so if you are using Alwil skin, and you still have all other skins in your skin directory, avast! should start properly.

Let us know if you solve your problem with installing new sound driver.

Cheers !
