Avast 7 doesn't update
« on: February 27, 2012, 05:16:02 AM »
WinXP SP2 pro. When I trying to update definitions manually, it shows "initialization" and do nothing. I've noticed that process avast.setup appears in the /setup dir, and terminates after 2-3 seconds. This already happens with older versions when dir "program files" was encrypted, but in this case it doesn't. I don't know, would Avast! automatically update or not...

No, 32bit.

Update your XP to SP3 and try again.

Very "cool" suggestion. I don't need SP2 because I don't want unneeded bugs, SP2 working perfectly. If Avast7 wouldn't fix this problem, I simply return to 6.x without any troubles.

Avast should work fine with SP2. I'm 100% certain that's not what's causing this problem.

There are no bugs in SP3, but a lot of security related fixes...!!!
The best AV can't protect you, if your system is open to numberless exploits.
But ok, it's up to you anyway. ;)

I had the same problem about 15 mins ago so I tried to download the VPS manually.  It timed out.  I just ran it again and it was all fine.  Perhaps there was just a large server load?

Several reports in the latest hours are reporting some kind of VPS update problem. I don't know if there is a server problem or something else, but the possibility that this is not specific for your system is certainly there.

So, won't it be good an installation from scratch?

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in Safe Mode. Boot after you've run it. Repeat this for any major avast! version you have ever installed/upgraded in your computer.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Nothing helps. I simply returned to last 6.x version and happy again. Will waiting for more stable versions of 7.x.
