It isn't their problem but that of MS as they are the ones that license the use of their proprietary web2mail conversion, DeltaSync, WEBDAVs replacement and only OE and Windows Mail can use that.
It used to work some time ago (for me) with MailWasher until M$ changed the rules of the game.

Live QnA from 2006 to now, but a few days ago they easily said Site is closing and all the what me and other members did in this would end.... they could not respect users.... F***!
for their mail system as what you said, they easily changed
rules of the game about their mail clients and made it unique...
their chat/mail support for windows a few months ago change from FREE to $$$$, at least for the people in outside of USA or Europa, at least I saw it need money... not free...
their media player changed to worse with every new update (more crash and glitch and non stable and slow)
do I have a wrong view from what they are doing? are they doing good and I see bad?
