Also of note, MS10-073 contains an update (rated Important) that addresses a local Elevation of Privilege as part of the two additional Stuxnet related elevate privilege vulnerabilities we announced in September. The second and final issue will be addressed in an upcoming bulletin.

I'm not in the slightest surprised after all there were 'only' 11-16 security updates this month (depending on OS, etc.) ;D

MS have been notoriously slow with patches, you never know there might be an out of sequence security update if it is considered serious enough.

.NET has been a nightmare for me when on dial-up and only recently got broadband so updated to .net 3.5 SP1, I decided against installing .net 4.0, which is fortunate as it is this new one which is vulnerable.

Mike, there are sites that describe how to "reset" Windows Update and start it again (folders, missing updates, etc.). Did you try googling?
Thanks for the tip, Tech.  I'd googled numerous times with varying results, but never before thought of including "reset" in the query.  Doing it that way, the very first hit was for an MS Fix-It which did indeed fix things fine (probably a glitch in the registry).

Slow as molasses, as usual (I'm typically downloading from anywhere at MS at well under 10KB/sec -- and that's on broadband), but at least it's working properly again.

There's also an engine update coming 10/18

http://blogs.technet.com/b/enginenotifications/archive/2010/10/11/new-antimalware-engine-is-planned-for-release-on-18-october-2010.aspx
Yeah, the new engine has a voice that says "I think I can, I think I can" as it chugs along in it's painfully slow scans.  ;D

I don't consider a scan time of one minute to scan 31,858 items "painfully slow", You must be thinking of Norton.
