Cannot Install Avast (Tried multiple things without sucess)
« on: January 12, 2010, 05:04:58 AM »
This CPU is running Windows XP and it's on Service Pack 3

Okay so basically this is my mom's computer and she had AVG- someone at school told me that the tech support team deemed AVG out dated against new viruses, and since I've always used Avast on my computer I thought I'd just uninstall AVG and install Avast on my mom's computer.

Nightmare. I've  been through this several times.

First of all- I've tried both the CNET and direct downloads- the direct download takes abnormally long to download, the bars just crawl by, it took at least ten minuites and ended up wit the same errors as the CNET download.

Basically, the first thing that happens is Avast tries to install Setupeng.exe, which takes FOREVER, at least twice as long as it does on MY computer, then if I let it go on, eventually four or three bars down (a remarkably long time later) the connection terminates.

If i get fed up with the ridiculous wait time  and click "cancel"   I end up in the same place, viewing  this error log.

I've been looking all over for an answer to this distaster, I even installed Malaware to clean the cpu before trying to install avast. the Quick Scan picked up one registry error, which I removed sucessfully, then the complete scan picked up nothing.

And it made no difference, I got the same errors.

Right now I've trying to install AVG again just so I can have some form of protection while I figure this sucker out. But it's taking forever.

What should I do? I'm at my wit's end here, please help me before my mom find's out I've wrecked her computer. X_x

Seriously- I love avast, I've had it on my computer this whole time without any problem- why is this happening on my mom's computer? I'm ready to tear my hair out.

Badfaith,

Are you using, the .exe that required download to install. (the .exe file only about 300 kb)

Try to download the full download the setupeng.exe

Filehippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/ let you use download manager, so you can donwload faster.
Just avast! free - is already enough. Using avast on Windows, Linux and Android.

It is still downloading extremely slowly. I have a feeling it will end up the same as the others, but I suppose I'll let it download anyway.

It took all night but AVG sucessfully installed. I still want to install avast though. :x

If you want to come back, uninstall AVG and I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it. Save the full setup (not the on-line small one from CNET).
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
6. Insert the license key.
7. Check and post the results.
The best things in life are free.

Badfaith,

Are you using dial-up? Even in my country with 64 kbps - downloading from filehippo rather faster than CNET. Or as faster as from server where ALWIL puts it (the link that given by Tech).

Well, just continue as Tech said, it should be fine.
