No sorry I made an error there, I was looking at a different thread  :-[

This should have been the instructions

Download  Windows Repair (all in one)  from this site

Install the programme then run

Go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the start repairs tab click start

Select the following  items and tick restart system when finished

i finished everything as per your instructions, unfortunately there is no change - all the problems are there as before... these last two exercises seemed to have made no difference...

going back to your comment: "However as we are looking at well over a month some items would not show within my 30 day scan limit "
in OTL there is an option to go back 60, 90 days etc. and i've done that before I ran the OTL scan and posted those logs. I just don't remember which one [i am pretty certain that I selected the 60 days option]

anyway, hope that you can come back to me with some further instructions. thanks a million for all your help so far!

Could you go Start > Run and type in the following commands pressing enter after each one
This will re-register the CRL files that produce the revocation popup

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Could you let me know if that clears it, also for the speed is it at startup or when browsing the net ?

doesn't seem like it is installing anything... when i click 'run' the hourglass briefly comes on but nothing happens...
after reboot - the revocation popup is still on...

The revocation can be turned off but that will reduce your protection somewhat ..  I will have a rummage around

do you have the "rummage around" yet?
also does that mean that I don't really have any viruses on this system?

No there are no viruuses that I can see and the only solution that I have found is to turn of the revocation in IE

Tools > Internet Options, then Advanced… Security
Remove the checkmark from: “Check for server certificate revocation*”
Close all instances of IE or reboot the computer

how about the other issues
such as:
the missing green volume bars from the screen
the windows defender stuck with the exclamation point and not finding any updates for itself
the microsoft fix it center not installing
etc, etc...

could it be that the viruses are past [i mean before] the time limitation of the search?

For windows defender an uninstall and then reinstall should cure that

All viruses will leave evidence of themselves either in the run keys or services/drivers otherwise they wil be impotent

When you try to install the fixit centre what error do you get ?

re: windows defender - i didn't uninstall it, but instead i clicked "repair" or something like that, and it seems that it might be running ok now. thanks for that tip. :-)

Are you able to run individual fixits ?  Also what version of dot net do you have.  It should be at least version 2
