One possible solution that appears to work in about 50% of the cases

Download msxml6_x86.msi at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6276

Download windowsxp-kb926139-v2-x86-enu.exe(PowerShell 1.0) at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=164073

Download fixitcenter_setup_x86.msi at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=186221

Install each in turn

now all I need to figure out is how to bring back the volume green power bars back to the screen... any ideas?

Download the latest driver from here and install it http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-40706-1
Let me know if that resolves the problem

i downloaded the driver, however when i tried to install it - it said that i already have a newer version and that i should uninstall that first before installing the one that you gave me. SO I went to uninstall it, however midway I just decided to hit "repair and update" or something of that sort, and after a re-start, guess what? the volume bars are back on!!!

however something else I noticed now is that java cannot update. It said that it is unable to download the files... it seems like again the same old issue that some programs seem like they are not able to connect to the internet... although it might not be the case with java here... either way: can you help me with that as well? thanks!

by the way! I have another small computer with xp on it - it is the HP Mini, and the internet speed [from speakeasy speed test] comes back as the absolute slowest in the house, eventhough I don't see any reason why it is happening only on that computer [the mini] Can you help me figure that out as well?

P.S. / Edit - My wife now tells me that the screen volume bar had appeared about a week ago when she was talking to her cousin on skype... and she failed to mention it to me... so I am now second guessing whether or not the "repair/update" thing that I did, was the thing that actually fixed it...

For Java use this programme to remove old versions and update http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRA_d5982.html

Run AdwClean on the HP and see if that improves it, if not run an OTL scan on it for me

RE: Java programme - I followed the instructions about removing, however when I am the step to "Run Uninstaller" the drop down box has nothing to selection as far as versions... On the next step though "perform removal routine" it deletes 410 files... Finally it installs the new Java, but when I run this tool again, it still doesn't show anything under the "Run Uninstaller" drop down box when searching for versions... Oh and by the way - under Revo Uninstaller it shows two Java's 1. Installed today Nov 12TH - v. 6.0.26 and 2. installed Sept 16TH v. 6.0.35
SO - How can I have installed "the most updated" version of Java today which is ...#26 and less [<] than the one installed Sept 16TH ...#35?

And why isn't anything showing up on the drop-down box as far as versions for the uninstaller to run from this tool which you gave me?

I will need to check that out but, as I have not had Java on my system for the last year or so I will need to ask  ;D

Is the internet speed intermittent or consistently slow ?

Unable to find a sensible answer about the Java I am afraid...  But my general recommendation now is to remove it from the system unless you really need it

Download Complete Internet Repair to your desktop

Unzip all the files to their own folder on the desktop
Within the folder double click CIntRep
The programme will then run
Select the items I have highlighted
Press go
Let me know if it is able to conduct the repair, there is a log at the bottom

RE: HP Mini - internet speed is consistently slow
CIntRep didn't help. I can't find the log file... There is a folder called "Logging," with CIntRep and CIRReset .txt files, do you mean that's the log files?

Now, regarding my wife's laptop (the initial problem of this post), something weird happened, out of the blue my wife called me to look at a black screen which said something in the sort of: the disk is not bootable, click any button to continue.... Naturally she said she didn't do anything, it just appeared out of nowhere.  So I just held the power button and booted from scratch, seems fine now... but the Java thing and now this black screen two liner thing is bugging me... any comments?

The black screen could indicate either a hard disc error or imminent failure

Run a Disc check initially to determine which it is

Yes that is the correct location for the logs
