Error Numbers 0x800ccc67 & 0x800ccc90

I am new to Avast 4.5 and the following errors are when trying to send or receive email. Using XP Firewall and no other virus protection.

0x800ccc67= "COMMAND NOT AVAILABLE"

0x800ccc90= "CLIENT RESPONSE INVALID"

I have no idea what to do to correct this as I am not a techie and when I installed Avast 4.5 today the only thing that was altered was that I put a check mark saying that I connect with a dial up. Other than that I done an install as was recommended.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can't you send or receive emails?
Which is your email program?
Do you use any other firewall besides XP internal one?

OE 6.0 and only use XP Firewall which I disabled and that made no difference.

I also run Spybot and Adaware SE.

I am also having a problem with updates. I assume that the 2 problems may possibly be related.

Message for updates "CANNOT CONNECT TO DOWNLOAD 5. AVAST.COM
66.98.196.85:80

Help is appreciated.

Strange...
I tried to Google your both errors 0x800ccc67 and 0x800ccc90
There are a lot of possibilities: firewall blocking is the most common.
But in your case, did you check avast settings for scanning both inbound and outbound mail (into Internet Mail settings)?
If so, can you disable and see what you get?

Make sure your browser is not set to "Work Offline" (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn't help, try switching the proxy settings from "Auto-detect" to "No proxy" (I'm assuming you're not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Followed your other suggestions and nothing seems to help. Is it possible that some settings need to be changed other than in 4.5?

My understanding was that if 4.5 is installed as recommended that with XP no modifications were necessary. Apparently I understood wrong.

Prior to installing Avast 4.5 I was using AVG 6.0 with no problems for 3 years and now that has been revamped or upgraded to 7.0 which I also had problems with email and updates. Makes me wonder if it is in my system and not the virus programs.

Any thoughts about this?

I could only imagine that ashMaiSv.exe won't connect the Internet for scanning but you've said that the firewall is not the problem...

Try to increase both timeouts (of avast into the Advanced tab of Internet Mail provider settings and of your email account, in Properties of the account, Advanced tab too). You can set both to 600, for instance. If you're on a DSL connection (not dial-up) it shouldn't be necessary a so long timeout anyway...

Other question: did you uninstall AVG 7.0 prior installing avast?

Google searching seems to mainly bring up Outlook configuration/setting problems for these error codes including username and server settings.

The following error message is in the log when trying for updates--

27.01.2005 05:44:16 package: ERROR:GetInetFile, CreateFile( "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\_av_proI.tm~a02816\dld1.tmp") returned 0x00000005

The log shows several of the same error repeated every time attempts are made to get updates.

I believe that if this problem can be solved then the email problem will be able to be corrected.

Suggestions appreciated.

What are you trying to update? VPS or the program?
Are you logged by a common user or an Administrator?

Make sure that the temp folders are empty: C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\_avast4_

Deleted both internet and offline files and the folder is empty. Same problem exists.
Trying to update this AM the following window appeared. - you are not connected to the Internet.
 - your firewall does not allow the program "avast*.setup" to access the Internet; you can find details in help or read the FAQ section on avast! website.
 - your HTTP proxy settings are incorrect.
 - the server is inaccessible because of a network error or maintenance.

I checked the firewall settings(XP) and "Avast! AntiVirus"is allowed under the exceptions. What other setting is needed and how do I add it. I tried to add other parts of Avast and would not allow as it was already listed.
