I'm happy to report that after running AIS for a couple of days now, there are no more crashes, not even one!! YAY, the patches worked.  I'm still running without the firewall and may try adding it again when I have more time.

Cheers,
Janice

Glad to hear that.  I wonder if it is related in some way to the NIC card and the drivers used

Worth looking into.  An alternative is to consider a third-party nic card you install compatible with Win8 drivers.  Only if you and essexboy determine this to be the case.

So what does this entail?  I haven't had time to try putting the firewall back on to see what happens but I don't think anything has changed since the last time :(

I see but I'm not wireless so I'd have  to look for something for hardwired pc?  Also now twice my display adaptor NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS has crashed and recovered on its own.  I get a completely black screen up and then the message that it has crashed or whatever and then that it has recovered.  It never ends, lol!

Cheers,
Janice

No that one is wireless only, and you have stated that you use Ethernet...  However, is your router wireless capable ?

What slots do you have as a new card is about the same price as a USB wireless one

Hi,

Is this what you are talking about:  http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/tp-link-tp-link-54mbps-wireless-pci-adapter-tl-wn350g-tl-wn350g/10199262.aspx?path=af9e078830659c87d1e18c59ccfe906den02 although it is not specific to Windows 8.

Cheers,
Janice
hi,

To be able to get the correct nic card you want and need, you will need to work within the parameters set up by the motherboard in your computer,  I believe one of the things you want is a hard-wired connection (Use a CAT5 or CAT6 networking cable), so the actual device must look like the one in essexboy's first link above with the square hole for inserting the CAT cable.

A wireless nic device always has an antenna attached to it.

See:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI  If you look carefully you might see something here that matches exactly what you have on your system/motherboard.

PCI is an acronym for Peripheral Component Interconnect and refers to the actual slots on the motherboard your nic card would be inserted into.  This is one of the many things all computer techs have to learn before they can be A+ certified.

If you are willing to do so, could you provide to us or to essexboy the exact make and model number of your motherboard?

A possibility here is to PM him directly with this information if you do not feel comfortable publishing this sort of information on a public forum.  That way he can point you to a card that will best meet your needs and will work well in Windows 8 because he will know exactly what you have.  If he says it is OK, that is what I would do.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks again you guys for all your help, you rock!!  I believe this is the info you need:  Main Circuit Board
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. Berkeley 1.xx Bus Clock: 267 megahertz BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 5.07 08/08/2007
or do you need something further?  I'll definitely go this route when I know exactly what to buy.

Cheers,
Janice

Okay, I'm going to check this out at my local computer store.  It is a bit more than newegg's but it doesn't come from the U.S. and I can talk to a sales clerk for any questions I may have.

Thanks soooo much!  I love Avast and this forum!

Cheers,
Janice
