Strange prob. with cable & Avast ?!?!?
« on: April 24, 2005, 04:51:23 PM »
???  I am new to this forum. I will appreciate any help you guys can give. I have spent many hours on the phone with tech support from my internet company and they do not seem to know crap. I will describe this very detailed so please forgive the long post.

I switched from dial up to cable internet about  two weeks ago. The service is fast. Well I decided to get better protection for my PC. I deleted Norton from my CPU using the uninstaller. I then downloaded AVG, Antivir, and Avast. I tried each one independently. Avast found more than any others so I decided it was the best and that we should keep it.
 Here is my  final setup:
 Windows XP home edition
  Avast 4.6 Home edition 4.6.652   VPS 0516-7
  Zone Alarm Firewall V: 5.5.062.011
   Motorola Surfboard cable modem

I have disabled the built in windows firewall as I have figured it is useless.
Well here is the problem. Everything seems to work great and then  usually late in the day my CPU will not let me onto the internet unless I use dial up for backup. THAT SUCKS. I try everything. Disable the firewall, avast, try firefox, internet explorer, even the update feature. It just will not let me on unless I go to dial up. That is why I called the tech support. They blamed it on the lines or whatever. On my modem when you turn it on it does a check on itself. When it gets to the "online" light it will just sit there and blink forever and never let it online. My ISP says it can not be a virus or trojan, etc..  I did not trust him so I ran a scan. After my scan no virus or trojan was found but I did get the following report. ( This is a little long I am sorry, I am only including it to give you guys all the info so I can hopefully solve this problem)

Now when I delete all of these files using the report screen, IT WILL LET ME BACK ON MY CABLE INTERNET and work like nothing ever happened !?!?!?!?!? What the ??
Then the next day it will be fine and later that day the process repeats itself again. The report may not be identical but it is very close. Same results. Now I could do this every day but come on.....it is getting old. My wife wants to get rid of the cable internet because of this problem. I say no way.
PLEASE help me people.....I am begging you.

oh yeah....one more question..... if I delete these files completely, which I am doing.....how are they coming back the next day ? Or at least they are similar files. I am confused. Are they downloading without my permission somehow?

Hi and welcome,

This may or may not be related to your problem -- but I note that your Sun JRE is quite old by at least two full versions, current one is 1.5-something.  There were a number of changes relating to security features just in going from 1.4 to 1.5.

For starters, try getting your JRE up to date and see if that helps.  Most of us have found that it's best to uninstall the old one first before installing the new one, otherwise you wind up with tons of garbage files.

Let us know if that helps, okay?  If not, hopefully one of the others will have suggestions.
Intel Atom D2700, 2 gig RAM, Win 7 x64 SP1 & IE-11, Firefox 51.0
(default). 320 gig HD, 15Mb DSL, Win firewall, Avast 12.3.2280 free, SpywareBlaster, MBAM Prem., Crypto-Prevent

I get this...but shouldn't this only have to do with the up dating? My problem results in a problem with everything, not just Avast.

That is why I called the tech support. They blamed it on the lines or whatever. On my modem when you turn it on it does a check on itself. When it gets to the "online" light it will just sit there and blink forever and never let it online. My ISP says it can not be a virus or trojan, etc..

ISP is right it is not a virus. Even if your PC was disconnected from the modem the online light still would have been flashing. I believe the online light indicates a connection has been made to your ISP's server, flashing means it is attempting to establish a connection.

This can be caused by the line or a faulty modem.

Only way to fix it is for a technician to investigate your connection.

Are you in uk, Blueyonder?

On my modem the light does blink when it is trying to establish a connection. It is constant green when it has established a connection that is capable of sending and receiving. My ISP said that they could tell my CPU was connected to their system  but that they could not receive a response back from my CPU. (basically that I was connecting but my "signal" was not getting back to them.) Therefore they are blaming the line. However, if the line was the problem then it would be "bad" going both ways .....not just one.
Now what I think you missed is once I delete the above said files after a scan, I can completely connect and surf or download like normal. That tells me that these files are somehow "blocking" my signal capabilities back to the server.
I do not believe this to be a virus, or my scan would list it as one. However it does say these files are corrupted, and when I delete them they mysteriously come back and cause the same problem later.
At least these are my takes on the situation. I believe that when people get together they can figure out anything. Thanks for helping me and keep coming with the ideas.
I just do not believe it to be the lines for the reason I have listed above.

OK guys....I have some more information for you. I did the update for JRE as I stated. And as I predicted it has happened again. I am now on dial up >:(.  I have noted something about this occurrence.....it happens every night at around 8:00 pm within a few minutes of this time. Why would it be so consistent on the time? I am about to run the scan and I will let you know the results.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME ......I AM LOSING MY MIND. :'(

Do you have your XP system restore function turned off? Are you running your system as a Limited User or as a System Administrator?

I am the " computer administrator" on my CPU. The only other account is my wifes. My XP system restore feature is on. We are on no time limit or anything.

The reason I asked about your restore system is that there could be a piece of Malware inside of the restore system itself. If so, the attempts to rid it from your pc with a Removal program might be futile. You may have to 1. Turn off the system restore function. 2. Turn off your pc and restart it about 2 mins later. 3. After booting up your pc turn the restore system back on, this will purge any Malware out of the system. Then IMHO I would leave the restore system turned off so that IF an infection DID get inside of it, then you wouldn't have to worry about it happening again. Just my opinion. :)

you may be onto something here....I tried to do a backup a month back using XP system restore and it would not. It just kept freezing up. I also tried to install XP service pack 2 and it could not install successfully. Are these signs of this? Wouldn't the virus scan show if there was malware in there? Also if I shut down the system restore...what will I do if I ever need to restore my system? make a boot disk ? does avast have a boot disk making program? And how would this be causing this problem if it was in system restore?
Sorry so many questions. i am learning some new stuff here.
