As far as I am aware 1497 is working fine.  It was for me before I switched to the beta

What about all the posts here about it deleting W7 64 bit system files on boot? Are you saying that's been fixed now?

They are correct in that... that was a windows UPDATE issue not a AVAST version issue.  I have no problems with my win 7 x64 1497 version "other" then the random google chrome updates it throws out which really pisses me off..  lol

Thanks for the replies guys, but I really can;t understand how Avast! wrongly detecting system files as viruses and deleting them can be the problem of Windows Update?

I guess I really am too old and stupid. :(

My fear is that if I update and my system files are deleted I will have no recourse other than to buy a new PC. I am not at all tech savvy enough to replace system files. I was hoping that maybe Avast! might have been able to fix the issue.

Okay, now no one has answered this yet: Because Avast! is constantly telling me that my system is now unprotected because I have NOT updated, is the system still protected are am at risk? Can I turn off the nags and warnings somehow if it is safe to continue with version 1489?

<snip>

Avast isn't detecting them and it certainly isn't deleting them, the problem as experienced relating to BSOD on boot is showing an avast file as responsible for the BSOD, but that is incorrect as that was the last file loaded before it.

This relates to a bad windows KB update (as essexboy and Bob mentioned) which was causing problems (BSOD) on some systems. This resulted in the KB update being withdrawn from windows update.

If you are saying it is detecting them (based on your reading of the forums), we need the file name, location and malware name, which I doubt you will find as it isn't detecting them.

Thanks, David. So, can no one tell me if my Avast is still protecting my system given that it keeps telling my system is not protected unless I update to 1497? Is it a bug, an unnecessary nag or does the program no longer offer protection if you do not update the program version? If it is just part of Avast's new adoption of nagware, fair enough, but if it really is no longer protecting my PC as the nags keep saying, then I would really like to know. Do any of the developers drop by the forums? Would they know?

I thought it was a simple question, but obviously not. :-)

It will still be protecting your system, up to a point, e.g. if any changes in the program update related to scan improvements, new features, etc. then you wouldn't see these. But for the most part program updates will also include stability updates/fixes so you don't benefit from those. If you are not seeing any actual notice that you aren't protected an X or ! symbol over the avast tray icon or error messages, etc. then you should have the protection limited to that version.

Essentially I believe that security programs should be fully updated wherever possible at all times and it looks like avast are pushing that viewpoint also.

In all honesty if you are going to monitor the forums to see if you should update or not, you may never update. That is the nature of a support forum people who have problems report them, those with no problems generally don't register and post that they aren't having any problems. So up to a point the forums are going to have a skewed viewpoint.

Yes, I have the warning icon on the tray icon, but it only wants me to update. Very alarmist. Previously you could use older program versions for some time with the usual auto definition updates. I guess I have a hard decision to make. Thanks for your time, David. Much appreciated.

Which warning, the X or the ! ?
If you open the avastUI then you should be able to get more information.

Personally I don't thing reporting a problem to be alarmist, my comments were generalised and I don't know why you are getting the warning.

It is the ! inside the yellow triangle. When I click on the tray icon the program UI says Attention New Program Version is Available. Tile background is orange and not green. It usually says Secure. If I click Resolve it wants to update. If I hover over the tray icon it says my system is not fully protected.

Which as I said may be related to functions, features or fixes in the new program update.

Is there anyone here I can ask who might know?
