I shut down all programs that scan activity prior to doing the update.
(Avast, Winpatrol, Malwarebytes, etc, etc. If it scans, it could cause a problem and could possibly block something vital.)
I updated 2 systems yesterday (one 32 bit one 64 bit) following those rules and had no problem with either system.
This will also speed up the process which is a long one.

Whilst this is a reasonable precaution given the complexity of this update. I would advise all considering doing this that they make a full system backup.

Two reasons for this:
1. an OS update can have its own issues and mess up your system.
2. being on-line for what may be an extended period without antivirus protection could result in getting infected.

Note two above, this happened to me many, many, years ago before installing avast (about 13 years ago) having just installed XP Pro and the CD didn't have SP1, going on-line to install that resulted in an infection. Fortunately I had drive image backups so not a disaster.

I highly doubt that MS is going to send you an infected file. :)
13 years ago you also probably didn't have a firewall.

The mere act of being on-line without protection could get you infected and not necessarily by the website you are actually on. I didn't get infected by MS during the download/installation of the SP, but it happened all the same.

I did have a firewall as some keep saying the windows firewall is fine, though I could well have had Agnitum Outpost Firewall 1.0 (free version) at the time.

The only thing that's online is the media creation tool doing it's job. This has worked for me
without problems.
I am seeing some threads with people having all kinds of update problems.

It's foolish not to do it. I'm sure that Microsoft will do what they did with the original Windows 8 and stop delivering updates if you don't get the latest version within a period of time. I personally have not seen the changes people are complaining about. I had Cortana turned off before the update and it remained turned off. It is NOT mandatory. The Start Menu is much better once you get used to it (which only takes about 10 minutes). I did have to reinstall the Mail and Calendar app on my tablet to get it to work again. I don't blame MS for the problems with my tablet because it is a highly customized machine (by RCA) with special drivers for some things. Having said that, I still think that paying $100 for a brand new 2 in 1 tablet running Windows 10 with an included keyboard was a deal too good to pass up. It does everything a Surface can do.

Anyway, the Anniversary Update is rock solid on my desktop just as Windows 10 has been from the start on it and the 3 other devices it is running on.

The odds of getting infected in the time it takes to update things (even if it takes 3-4 hours) are so remote as to be infinitesimal. You don't get infected just by being on line, especially if you are running through a router with it's built in firewall.

I had the Anniversary update installed but I didn't like it so I switched back to the previous build.  I have a new computer which is win 10 and I'm not going to update that one.  I see no reason to.

I remember when you didn't like Windows 10. :)
Maybe if you followed instructions, you might not have as many problems as you always seem to have.  :(

Well your infinitesimal took only a few minutes before I got hit this mind you was when I was still on dialup.

But that matters not one jot, the principal of making a drive image before carrying out an OS update is sound (what I was talking about in Reply #1322), over and above whatever the risk of infection might be

I totally agree with that and I made backups of both devices that got the update before applying it.

This really can save you a whole lot of grief over time and I can't understand why so many people don't do this as a matter of routine.
