False "Threat Detected"
« on: October 26, 2014, 10:34:53 AM »
I have a scheduled full scan run weekly on my Windows 7 system. On the last two or three occasions it has run, it has left the user interface open with the words "Threat Found", in red, showing. There has been nothing in the virus chest, and the Scan History shows "no virus found". Should I be concerned about this, or is it just a bug in Avast!?

Regards,

Bob

Sounds to me that you are not using the latest version of avast.
There was indeed a bug, but that should have been solved now.

or

right click the avast ball near the clock and choose update > program update

OK, I've updated. I had autoupdate set and my definitions were updating regularly, so I assumed the program would do likewise. It always used to do so.
Thanks for the tip,

Bob

It should have updated the program automatically if you have that enabled,
but there are always those nasty computer Gremlins that can cause strange things to happen. ;)

If everything went well, the problem should be solved now.
If not, let us know.

Update is spread over weeks to ease server load
if all 220 000 000 users updated at same time would be like a DDoS attack .....

I have a scheduled full scan run weekly on my Windows 7 system. On the last two or three occasions it has run, it has left the user interface open with the words "Threat Found",

It actually says "THREAT DETECTED", and even the very latest version does it (in my case on Windows 8.1).

Sometimes the UI pops open after a scan and does not say that, even though the option to open the UI after a scan is unchecked.  And sometimes it doesn't pop open at all.

It's a bug that's been in the product for a while now, and it's still in 2015.

If the message alarms you, just click the Scan history link at the bottom, scroll down, and see that no actual virus was detected.

Could you provide a screenshot?
Is there a file path given?

Had this happen on three home PCs yesterday.......all W7 64bit latest.
I have Avast and MBAM scan every early morning (different times of course)
The Avast UI was expanded (of course I hate that and would like a minimized version).....and all three had "THREAT DETECTED".  If I click on RESULTS.....nothing comes up....go to History and the scan shows no threat detected and nothing in Quarantine.  So yesterday I ran FULL scan on all three along with another MBAM FULL scan....clean.

This morning I woke up and only one PC had this.

Very odd......since the "program" is not changing perhaps this is tied to a VBS update ?
I'll monitor over the coming days to see if repeats.

When you open up the virus chest is there anything there?

There are a couple of ways to access the chest...
1) Create a shortcut in the GUI...GUI>right click on a tile> select on choice in the drop down menu.
2) GUI>Scan for viruses>lower right corner.

It's a bug that's been around a long time - around 5 months.

It has to do with the UI popping open at the end of a scan.  Sometimes it says THREAT DETECTED when there is none, and sometimes not.  Sometimes the UI pops open and sometimes not.

At one point someone from Avast acknowledged it and said a fix would be made available, but none ever was.  That implies nothing good.

I've captured screenshots at various times, up to including a second by second description of what panels show when at the end of a scan.

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160036.msg1149723#msg1149723

More info, going back as far as June 2014:

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=151496.msg1100468#msg1100468

I got a kick out of some folks making the ludicrous suggestion that people shouldn't do scans.

Para-Noid always seems to ask for screenshots for this one.   :P
