Why should I stick with Avast?
« on: December 24, 2014, 05:18:06 PM »
I've never been displeased with Avast. That being said, I've never really been happy, either--I just tend to have neutral relationships with my AV. (I think my level of contentment has been higher than with McAfee, for example.)

But I just read AV-Comparatives most recent reporthttp://www.av-comparatives.org/real-world-protection-test-august-november-2014/, and there are quite a few programs that are rated better.

So someone convince me: Why stick with Avast? (besides the great name)

Why should you stick with Avast?

1) It's orange! (Best color in my opinion)

2) It actually offers multiple layers of protection, (Web, Email, File System)

3) Avast is free and has a large user base which also increases protection, For example, if one of those millions of users detects a new threat, it is sent to the cloud and protects everyone else.

4) Avast has an active forum where Avast's staff often posts and communicates with users.

5) If that's not enough well, you need to decide for yourself whether you want Avast or not.

You have your own personal 'real time' experience of avast over the time you have had it compared to the restricted time frame of any test.

Only you can convince yourself - how can anyone judge your use of avast or your browsing habits. Personally I don't go looking at test sites, but rather rely on my own personal experience of avast in over ten years of use and no infections.

Have you had any problems with avast  (that could not be solved) ?
Have you been infected when using it?

I'd be interested to see which one you are planning to move to and why ?
Frankly, they all have their warts/bugs/bloat-ware.
Problem is you need to dig into each's Forum to truly see the "gotchas".
If you are not willing to do that then you are just going to trade one set of problems for another.

As stated above, the test for Avast for me has been its ability over the years to protect me.
The price I pay is dealing with the other issues/items...but they all have that.

The overview charts do show improved Avast performance in November (presumably the first test of Avast 2015), perhaps things are finally starting to move in the right direction.

If you haven't had any issues/infections while running avast why change?
My "real world" is just that. Test labs run their tests in a sterile "lab" environment.
Infection free for almost five years (I first installed avast in early March 2010) is a good enough answer for me.

@Eric Graywolf,
I'm confused. You state that you've used Avast for some time, have never had a problem, don't have any infection
but, read someplace that there is better protection available.
You now want to change to that 'better" AV.  Why??? How will it increase your current protection which hasn't let you down ???

Sometimes you`ve just got to appreciate a good thing when you have it.
I`ve tried several AV`s over the years and Avast is the best for me.
Of all I tested,Avast has the most overall protection while using the "least" amount of system resources.
That`s a win for me.

Just a quick comment on this and you guys can tell me if my points are valid.

For everyone saying they've used Avast for 5 or 10 years and not been infected, great, but is it possible you haven't been infected because your using other security software, or you practice safe surfing, or your a informed user and practice other safety measures such as updating vulnerable software?

Is Avast a great antivirus, no doubt, is it the best, doubtful, is it right for everyone, unlikely.

So when you comment that you have used it for X amount of years and haven't been infected your really commenting for yourself only, other people have different needs because they use their computer differently, so Avast may not be right for them. It doesn't matter how safe you have been with Avast, they could use Avast and be infected in 10 minutes. So yes, its ok to say Avast has protected you but don't infer it will do the same for everyone with the same rate of success.

Am I out to lunch here?

@ digmor
Interesting, however one can only state their experience and if in fact they have not gotten infected while using Avast ( And whatever else they use or surfing habbits) , it is what it is.
All things being equal, IMO Your argument could very well hold regardless of AV.
The statement was simply about Avast.  :)
