I scan all incoming material: internet downloads, email, and dvds. But having scanned the hard drive once, I leave Standard Shield shut off, because I don't want to waste time scanning files that are opened off my hard drive. Windows Security Center then pops up the occasional warning that anti-virus is "turned off." And if you open the Security Center it shows Virus Protection is "Off." Actually it's only the Standard Shield provider that's off. This is a nit, but is there any way to defeat the Windows Security Alerts? And does it matter whether it's the purchased version or the freeware?

So, how do you get the incoming HTTP traffic, other protocols, etc. scanned?

I don't want to waste time scanning files that are opened off my hard drive.

So, configure your protection level, uncheck some files to not be scanned but do not turn off Standard Shield!

In fact there is, but you're be double un-protected: without warning and without antivirus.
