(we assumed that our chances of winning are so miniscule that it's pointless to go there). Well, you see, sometimes it pays to be optimistic (but it was probably still better than to go but not win).
Vlk,
This should be a good life lesson.  Never assume and you know why... ;D ;D
It is always better to see a glass as half full not not as half empty.

When will there ever be a vote on a products merits not just on simple number of votes it receives???

As I said, the number of votes only determined the 4 finalists in each category (and they said they have some tampering detection techniques in place).

The number of votes has no effect on the overall winner, though...

So, the public voting just determines the 4 finalist in each catagory. Then ,by some other means, SC magazine selects the winners.

Still not accurate IMHO... I bet if users didn't vote the way they did, SC would never pick these 4 as finalists. Just like we see those different antivirus reviews all over the internet... some are bad, some are good. Maybe SX would pick these 4, who knows... but for sure, this shouldn't be any guideline for how good some software is... maybe just how popular it is.

Some other things can tell us much better if program is good or bad... for example, technical support, how regular updates are, software team and clients/customers relationship, and some other factors.

I really don't care what method was used in the end to determine that Alwil Avast! got this well deserved prize. About time !
The amount of votes from Avast! Users was fantastic, and IMHO genuine  :)
As Vlk said:
Quote
Avast got about 200,000+ votes in those two days, whereas a typical figure for a competitor's product was something like 5,000 votes during the whole 3-week voting period.

The  guy at another AV forum who went to the trouble of joining that board to post against my recommending Avast! simply as a "good" AV ;  he actually called it SH*T , is going to have that thread resurrected, and told how wrong he was  ;D

True, but still... what's the point if you have 3 millions people voted for one program and that was actually the only reason it got some award (not talking about avast! in this case) and you know there are some much better programs out there that didn't even bother to compete for some award. I would always want to know that my program got some award because it deserved it thanks to its quality, rather than the number of votes. We all know how voting usualy goes, so its never quite acurate.

And that guy from the other forum is nothing else but ignorant... I bet he has no clue about avast! or any other antivirus for that matter... he is just one of those who like to install/uninstall every second week, and worst of all, not even bothering to properly uninstall previous AV... just "stick" the new one on the top of the old one, and that's it... and then he wonders why his AV doesn't work the way he expects...

Yeah, I agree Sasha. I try hard to not " recommend " any software in general because it generally just turns into a pointless argument. Plus offering any sensible security advice can also have a similar effect, so let the people do as they will .

As far as Awards;  really they should have a Criteria as you said:
Quote
"... for example, technical support, how regular updates are, software team and clients/customers relationship, and some other factors."
Detection rates of true Malware infections , time taken releasing signatures to detect new outbreaks, essentially based on technical factors, rather than popular votes. I suppose the popularity of an AV program is realated to a users perception of these factors though, or you would hope so.

As far as the guy slamming Avast! , I couldn't be bothered tackling him. His stupidity will be his major Spyware threat.

BTW Here's the streaming video http://www.voiceprompt.co.uk/scawards/awards06_3.wvx
and in the beginning (approx. minute 1:30), you can see Pavel collecting the prize on the stage :D

Edit: Fixed the link to point to the correct stream ;)
