The Emergency Updater does NOT have internet access on our systems!
Are you talking of home computers or business?
Besides, it's a GUI issue, the user is always protected (ok, it's annoying, but not dangerous).

Both.

it's annoying, but not dangerous

You're stating the obvious.

It is obvious that you can't undo what's happened. The problem has been fixed and the solutions have been posted.
I agree with you that it shouldn't have happened but that doesn't change the facts. I'm also sure that more care will be taken in the future so as to prevent this from happening again.
Peace !

Fixed. All fresh installations are OK from now on.

For existing affected users, fastest way to fix it is to run C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastEmUpdate.exe and then reboot. Others are getting the fix anyway, it just takes some time.

Sorry for being so brief, we were working hard to get the fix in the production ASAP. You were protected the whole time. The issue was in the GUI - it did not know Avast service is in fact running.

Thanks for your patience,

Petr

Does "Fixed" mean that the program will now accept my license...around 20 months remaining?   I'm extremely disappointed with the program and the hit/miss possibilities of updates associated with the software.  Things have really deteriorated since the days that I confidently used Avast!

Nothing worked last night for me.  Firewall didn't work.  Anti-virus didn't work.  Won't accept my license (which Avast.com claims is active and I still have several license slots remaining...license for three computers and not all the licenses are in use now since I converted two of our four over to Linux.)

I uninstalled the program last night after struggling for hours to get it to work and moved on to a highly rated equivalent offered by my internet provider after over 10 years of an Avast! user and supporter.   Are there any assurances that Avast's QC will improve?  If not, I'll regrettably move on to another provider which has a better reliability record.

The answer is yes but, you'll now first need to totally remove the other AV before you can re-install Avast and apply your license.

And What about the 'reused passwords bug'? Are you still working on it? When will the fix be up?  ???

During installation, it will need internet access for the Emergency Updates to take place.

That defeats the whole purpose of an OFFLINE installer!

It was an errant emergency update that caused the problem.  The new emergency update that will be downloaded has no issues.

Sure seems like web browsing is much faster on Windows XP PRO SP3 on my Dell Dimension 8200 P4
Did Avast finally get this to be a less intrusive program for the older systems ?

*sigh*
Like I've already stated several times now; some users (myself included) run these installers OFFLINE (like intended), and the Emergency Updater does NOT have internet access!
That's why we need new and fixed offline installers!!

Confirming that running the above instructions from an (Elevated) Command Prompt did correct the issue here:

-Thank You-, to all involved, for your efforts & the timely fix,

Tomaso,

offline installers are not affected by the serious "You are unprotected" issue.

Normally, we would release new offline installer every month or so with every new version.
However, this time, we will be definitely releasing new offline installers sooner.
During the month, between big releases, we are fixing bugs using emergency updates, updating engine and virus definitions couple of times a day using the virus definition updates. Moreover, every couple of minutes, virus definitions are updated via the streaming update channel.
So, it is a generally good idea to be on-line at least sometimes to have everything up-to-date.

And yes, by fixing bugs, we sometimes introduce new bugs (like this Friday night bug). We are only human. But be assured, that we are reviewing our release and quality assurance process thoroughly, so anything similar never happens in the future.

Which is one the reasons I stated in another post when Avast said new versions would be out monthly.
Yes, if done properly, it could be good. But more likely such rapid releases (like with Adobe Flash & Shockwave)
will be riddled with bugs. Some serious, some just an annoyance. I would rather see a new version released
say quarterly or twice yearly. This gives time for the Beta Testers to make sure all the bugs are ironed out.

That's NOT the issue that I've been refering to.
