Did you ever hit the wrong key and shut down the computer in error ???
Or, system updated and rebooted when you're right in the middle of a project ???
This might help:

Yeah, i really cant understand what microsoft are thinking with this former metro interface, at least you would have "thought" they would have included the option not to use it rather than getting a third party app to enable the normal desktop ::) not for me im afraid :-X

I don't miss anything, what you don't want you don't miss.

Now Microsoft is completely removing the ability to boot straight to the desktop, The latest RTM builds of Win 8 no longer can. The third party utilities still work though, so far.

And Bob still wonders why I want nothing to do with it, I absolutely hate this autocratic attitude, despite tons of reviews that don't like the Metro 70s style cubist interface. I mean what the h3lls the problem in having that as an option for those desktop users that don't want it.

Surely that is preferable than those that don't like the interface not buying it.

Seems just another chapter of the fight with Google and the market share of the mobile platform...

That was never possible except with the aide of a third party app.
All of this is actually Windows 8 related.  ;)
Which I'll be installing in one more week :)

Actually it was possible according to a lot of people. You could make Win 8 automatically switch to the desktop after briefly displaying the interface that looks like it was designed by Fisher Price. Now they are finding that you can no longer do that.
